Nancy Pelosi: Trump is 'Impeached for Life'

Ms Pelosi has held on to the articles in a standoff with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

Even if Trump advisers testify and Biden doesn't, a fight would give Trump a measure of what he wants - more attention on Biden and his son, Hunter Biden - and it's possible that witnesses called by Democrats would find ways, among them asserting executive privilege, to ensure that any testimony helps rather than harms the president.

GOP Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said Sunday he wants to hear from the Bidens "and find out - get to the bottom of that".

Pelosi initially indicated that the caucus meeting would discuss which House members would serve as impeachment managers and schedule the vote to select them-the final action required before the beginning of a Senate trial of Trump-leading to reports that the trial could begin as early as Thursday.

"What we think we accomplished in the past few weeks is that we wanted the public to see the need for witnesses", Pelosi said during an appearance on ABC News' "This Week". Let's be optimistic about the future, a future that will not have Donald Trump in the White House.

As the second impeachment trial in U.S. history was about to begin in January 1999, senators were at an impasse over the question of witnesses. Her decision to end the showdown with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell does not fully bring closure to the question of whether the Senate will consider new witnesses, as some want, shifting pressure on senators to decide.

When asked if he would testify if subpoenaed, a move Trump and Republicans unhappy with how the inquiry was handled in the House have proposed, Schiff said, "I'm not a fact witness". Joe Biden has said that he would not testify, then he said he would testify.

Pelosi alleged that Trump is preventing witnesses to depose and come forward.

House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) accused President Donald Trump of distorting America's intelligence on Iran in order to cover for how his administration has handled the situation in the Middle East.

Mr McConnell, who has been working closely with the White House on strategy, said on Friday that the Senate is "anxious to get started".

The latest flare-up in the long shadow war started with the USA killing of General Soleimani, in an air strike in Baghdad on January 3.

The House of Representatives, where the Democrats enjoy a majority, had impeached Trump last month. If four GOP senators sided with all 47 Democrats, they could control which rules were adopted.

A template for the witness subpoena, included in the Senate rules, summons them to appear before the Senate.

This past week, McConnell announced that he has the 51 votes required to launch the trial on those terms, and not Pelosi's.

The House voted more than three weeks ago to impeach Trump on charges that he abused his power by pressuring the president of Ukraine to investigate Democrats, specifically Trump political rival Joe Biden.

The notion of impartial justice is crucial to upholding Constitutional values and securing the American people's confidence in the essential fairness of any Senate trial.

The California Democrat also warned the Senate, where Republicans have a narrow majority, against dismissing the impeachment case.

Once the Republican-led Senate receives the charges, the trial is expected to begin swiftly.

What they're saying: "That was a bad statement to make publicly", said Don E. of McConnell's comments. Warren then reportedly said she could win because she could "make a robust argument about the economy and earn broad support from female voters", to which Sanders replied "he did not believe a woman could win", CNN continues.
