Putin in Talks to Push for Libya Ceasefire as Deadline Nears

All the way through the talks, PM Modi prolonged the season's greetings to President Putin and the folks of Russian Federation.

But earlier this month, the Iranian government announced that it would abandon the nuclear deal in response to the USA drone attack that killed Major General Qasem Soleimani on January 3 in Baghdad.

"Russia and Germany resolutely stand for the continued implementation of the joint plan", Xinhua news agency quoted Putin as saying on Saturday after his meeting with Merkel.

"I hope that by the end of this year, or in the first quarter of next year, work will be finished and the gas pipeline will start operating", Putin told a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel after talks at the Kremlin.

Germany and Russian Federation are among the world powers that have been trying to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran after the United States withdrew from the agreement unilaterally in 2018.

Russian private military contractors have clandestinely fought in support of Russian forces in Syria and Ukraine, media reports have previously revealed.

Putin and Erdogan reached a consensus on Wednesday and urged to establish a ceasefire in Libya starting at midnight on January 12.

Trump administration proposal would ease environmental impact assessments for federal projects
While the regulations don't change the law itself, they dramatically change how the law would be implemented by federal agencies. Trump has called for oil and gas pipelines in particular to be pushed ahead despite local opposition throughout his presidency.

"If there are Russian citizens there, then they are not representing the interests of the Russian state and they are not receiving money from the Russian state", said Putin, in addressing Libya specifically.

Putin and Merkel also discussed Iran's increasing abandonment of the 2015 nuclear deal. "Not only to Europe, but also to other regions".

"We will, of course, be able to finish it on our own, without enlisting our foreign partners", Putin said.

Swiss-Dutch pipe-laying company Allseas stopped its work on the pipeline in December through fear of getting hit by the sanctions, which were adopted by the United States earlier that month.

With the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline expected later this year, the United States has chose to impose sanctions against the commercial European and Russian companies which are now involved in its construction.

As for the Ukrainian plane crash in Iran, Merkel said it was an "important step" for Iran to admit that the tragedy on Wednesday had been an "unintentional human error".

"There is a lot to discuss", said Merkel, adding that "talking with one another is always better than talking about one another".
