Iran Admits to Downing Airplane, Sparking Renewed Anti-Government Protests

A candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 in front of the Amirkabir University in the Iranian capital Tehran on January 11

The tragedy occurred with Iran's air-defense forces on high alert following an Iranian ballistic-missile attack a few hours earlier against USA forces in Iraq. They are also mourning the dead, which included many young people who were studying overseas.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he does not care if Iran enters negotiations to de-escalate ongoing tensions with Washington, though his national security adviser suggested Tehran has no other option after U.S. sanctions and protests. The protests spread to at least a dozen cities outside the capital, and Tehran security forces fired tear gas, rubber bullets and some live ammunition to disperse the crowds. "They promise not only us and the grieving nations but also to the entire global community that no one will escape punishment", the Ukrainian foreign minister said.

Photos and video after the incident show pools of blood on the sidewalk.

"Iran's recklessness comes in response to the United States-ordered killing of Iran's architect of terror, the head of their special Quds Force, General Soleimani", Adler said in a recent show.

Britain, in turn, summoned Iran's ambassador on Monday "to convey our strong objections" over the weekend arrest.

But Iran's foreign ministry hit back, calling for "an immediate halt to all interference and provocation by the British embassy". Another Fars video showed demonstrators on Sunday night tearing down a poster of Soleimani in Tehran.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesman, James Slack, said the envoy's detention was "an unacceptable breach of the Vienna Convention".

Rouhani added that the "tragic event" would be subject to a thorough investigation.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has vowed to "pursue justice" with Iran.

U.S. 'outraged' by latest attack on Iraqi base
Officers at the base said that it had become clear they would be attacked by mid-evening on the night the missiles hit. The first strike landed sometime after 1:35 p.m. on January 8, and the barrage lasted nearly two hours.

The president said: "The responsibility falls on more than just one person", adding that those found culpable "should be punished". Others were Ukrainians, Afghans, Britons, seven Swedes and 10 people who resided in the Scandinavian country. "But sometimes countries take actions without informing their allies", he said, referring to an absence of warning from the USA before killing top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.

"I have talked about the tremendous pain and loss that Canadians feel and the need for clear answers about how this happened and how we will make sure it never happens again", Trudeau said.

Earlier, Canada's foreign minister announced that a Canadian-led group of nations that lost citizens would press Iran for an open and transparent investigation at a meeting in London on Thursday.

Tehran has acknowledged shooting down the Ukrainian jetliner by mistake on Wednesday, killing 176 people, hours after it had fired at USA bases to retaliate for the killing of Iran's most powerful military commander in a drone strike ordered by Trump.

Canada's Transportation Safety Board, meanwhile, said Monday that Iranian officials have invited it to participate in analysis of the voice and flight data recorders from the Ukrainian jetliner.

Despite footage from the site of the disaster appearing to show bulldozers at work, the Revolutionary Guards' top commander denied evidence had been tampered with.

"We are working very hard to build trust daily in order for us to brought in", Fox said.

"We didn't move the wreckage of the aircraft, we didn't change the scene, we didn't move the air defense system, and we didn't (alter) the radar readings".
