Huge blast at chemical factory kills at least one in Spain

At least one dead after explosion and fire at chemical plant in Spain

Iqoxe CEO Jose Luis Morlanes said the explosion occurred in a tank of ethylene oxide in a part of the plant that had not had any problems since it was built in 2017.

The fire was now contained, the spokesman said, adding that two people suffered severe burns, another victim sustained less severe burns and three had light injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicated the force of the factory explosion near the coastal city of Tarragona killed another person in a nearby neighbourhood when a piece of flying metal from the plant struck his apartment, regional authorities said.

The regional fire service said on Twitter one person had died in a building affected by Tuesday's blast in the port city of Tarragona, where the plant of the Industrias Quimicas del Oxido de Etileno company is located.

Video footage showed high flames and columns of smoke around the complex.

Two people are dead and eight have been injured following an explosion and fire at a chemical plant in northeastern Spain.

Canadians Angry After "Free Coffee For Life" Offer To Prince Harry, Meghan
And even the Sussexes' own aides were said to be stunned as they had been kept in the dark - and felt "stabbed in the back". Their decision has sparked outrage - with Prince Charles "incandescent with rage" and the Queen said to be "disappointed".

However, authorities said there was no evidence of any "toxic cloud".

Firefighters moved in to put out the blaze, which was said to have begun in an ethylene oxide tank, and to "cool down the adjacent tanks".

Black smoke billowed above the factory in Tarragona, following what rescue services called a "chemical accident".

Some local residents told Tarragona Radio that the blast could be heard from miles away.

Since 2015, the city has housed a 1,200-hectare (2,965-acre) "chemical hub", ChemMed, that was described as the largest of its kind in southern Europe.

Tuesday's explosion comes just over a month after a December 11 blaze at a solvent and industrial residues recycling plant in the northeastern town of Montornes del Valles.
