China says it 'never engages' in cybertheft after US charges

The case resembles a 2014 indictment that accused five members of the PLA of hacking into American corporations to steal trade secrets.

The Equifax episode marks the US's latest clash with China over the country's alleged hacking of American targets.

"Once you have three of these data sets and you start combining them-hotel behavior from Marriott combined with financial information from Equifax combined with healthcare information from Anthem-suddenly you know way more about an individual", Vecci explains. The evidence indicates that pledge was short-lived, if it was honored at all.

Beijing said Tuesday it "never engages" in cybertheft, following United States indictments of four Chinese army members for alleged involvement in the 2017 hacking of credit rating agency Equifax. The motives, a s with several others hacks that preceded it, appear to be more about espionage t han stealing trade secrets, cybersecurity experts say.

The Equifax hack fits a pattern of past Chinese cyberattacks, said Michael Daniel, a former White House cybersecurity co-ordinator, because stolen data can support other spying efforts.

Here are the biggest cases of wholesale data theft blamed on Chinese agents.

FBI Wanted Notice Against The Indicted Chinese Military Personnel
China says it 'never engages' in cybertheft after US charges

The FBI admits it now has no way to apprehend the Chinese officials, all of whom are out of reach in China. He said that, given the dedication of Chinese military hackers, a violation could have happened even if the vulnerability had been repaired. "But it is unlikely to have any effect on Chinese hacking".

Hackers stole personal information on almost 80 million current and former customers and employees of the Indiana-based health insurer over at least seven months ending in January 2015.

"It is reassuring that our federal law enforcement agencies treat cybercrime - especially state-sponsored crime - with the seriousness it deserves, and that the Justice Department is committed to pursuing those who target USA consumers, businesses and our government", Begor added.

A United States congressional oversight report released in 2018 said that the credit reporting agency had failed to "implement an adequate security program to protect this sensitive data". As one pundit noted, the cost to the public and to the global economy has been wrought more by the fear and panic which accompanied the announcement about this new virus than the actual attack of the virus itself. But as things stand, conspiracy theories and other such nearly unbelievable hypotheses about relations not only between the world's greatest powers but of nation states will abound as long as fears, biases and prejudices dictate the course of things.

"The scale of the theft was staggering", Attorney General William Barr said Monday in announcing the indictment. The quartet used encrypted communications and routed their internet traffic through 34 different servers located across 20 countries to mask their work, conducting over 9,000 searches for personally identifiable information before compressing and exfiltrating the data in smaller chunks to avoid detection.

The Equifax security breach shocked the nation when it was disclosed in summer 2017, as the names, birthdates and Social Security numbers of so many Americans were exposed.
