Troops under fire at checkpoint in Syria during clash with locals

Coalition Says US Soldier Suffered Scratch as Troops Fired on Civilians in Syria

The U.S. troops opened fire and after a civilian was killed and another wounded, the residents attacked the convoy and damaged four vehicles, SANA said.

The Americans defended themselves, Caggins said in a statement posted online. They returned fire and at least one Syrian was killed and another wounded, Syrian state television reported.

Out of self-defense, the patrol returned fire and the situation was de-escalated, Caggins added.

The Coalition patrol has since returned to their base, he added.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said residents and armed pro-government militiamen blocked the path of a U.S. convoy. The human rights organization said it wasn't clear if the killed man was a civilian or a militia member. At that point, US troops fired with live ammunition at the people and popped smoke to drive them back.

On several occasions recently, USA forces have blocked Russian military convoys from carrying out patrol missions in northeast Syria.

Videos posted on social media appeared to show residents quarrelling with U.S. military personnel.

The man killed was a civilian from Khirbet Amo village, Syria's state-run SANA news agency said. USA soldiers were seen standing in the middle of the melee, trying to disperse the crowd.

State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV aired a cellphone video showing an armored vehicle flying a US flag standing on a rural road while a auto appeared to be blocking its way. The video was posted to Twitter by Syrian Kurdish journalist Kamiran Sadoun, who said regime supporters attacked first.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season Two content confirmed
And this would lineup with something Coddy Johnson, President and Chief Operating Officer, said during a recent earnings report. This shouldn't be taken as a confirmation that a Battle Royale mode is coming but it certainly doesn't rule it out.

"It looks like this incident is fueled in some way by the growing tensions and also the growing feeling that the Syrian regime is on the winning side [of the war]", said Seth Frantzman, director of the Middle East Center for Reporting and Analysis. Russian Federation has supported President Bashar al-Assad's government, while Turkey is the rebels' main backer.

At one point in the standoff, a Russian army convoy also arrived at the scene in an apparent attempt to mediate the rare confrontation involving U.S. and Syrian fighters. The Americans occupy austere outposts in the provinces of Hassekeh, where Wednesday's incident took place, and Deir al-Zour, and where Turkey has also entered the fray.

U.S. troops in the region operate as part of the US-led coalition fighting the remnants of the Islamic State jihadist group.

Erdogan was referring to the 2018 agreement between Russian Federation and Turkey in which the two countries' troops would enforce a demilitarized zone in Idlib.

The TV report said protests spread, preventing reinforcements from coming to help the US convoy.

"Nothing serious, nothing particularly threatening", he said.

Residents said a Russian patrol from a contingent in Qamishli airport was sent to the village, which lies in an area in northeast Syria where Russian, U.S. -backed Syrian Kurdish forces and the Syrian army all have a presence.

Wednesday's incident could lead to increased tensions in the area.

The TV said protests spread, preventing reinforcements from coming to help the US convoy. The video was posted to a channel on the online app Telegram run by Syria's Radio and Television General Authority.

In one of the worst incidents of violence against USA troops deployed in northeastern Syria, an armoured vehicle appears to have caught fire, apparently from fire bombs lobbed at the convoy.
