World Health Organization urges continued alert against new coronavirus

"The number of newly confirmed cases reported from China has stabilized over the past week, but that must be interpreted with extreme caution", said WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced yesterday in Geneva that the coronavirus, first discovered in Wuhan last December, will be known as COVID-19 from now on, which stands for COronaVIrus Disease and then the year (2019) it emerged.

China drew global condemnation for covering up cases during the 2002-03 SARS outbreak, whereas the World Health Organization has praised measures taken by Beijing to combat COVID-19. In Japan, 39 new cases were confirmed on a cruise ship under quarantine at Yokohama, bringing the total to 174 on the ship.

Clinically diagnosed cases are unique to Hubei statistically.

There are now more than 44,200 confirmed cases across China, based on previously released figures from the government.

"I think it's way too early to try to predict the beginning, the middle or the end of this epidemic right now", said Michael Ryan, head of WHO's health emergencies programme.

Most of the cases have been in Hubei, where about 56 million people have been placed under virtual quarantine.

Vindman, Trump alleged, "avoided the chain of command, leaked, [and] did a lot of bad things". Trump has repeatedly complained about Vindman's testimony and called him insubordinate.

China has been praised by the World Health Organization for its transparent handling of the outbreak, in contrast to the way it concealed the extent of the SARS virus.

Authorities in Hubei have been accused of concealing the gravity of the outbreak in early January because they were holding key political meetings at the time.

But it has faced continued scepticism among the global public, with suggestions that there may be similarities with the way it dealt with the 2002-2003 outbreak.

Although no passengers have fallen ill on board, the ship had been turned away by Japan, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Thailand over fears that someone on the cruise could have the virus.

Total cases in the province have now reached 48,206, showed the commission data.

There are 13 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in six states throughout the U.S.
