Coronavirus infections skyrocket as China refines diagnostic methods

The number of new coronavirus cases in China dropped for a second straight day in a virus outbreak that has infected about 45,000 people and killed more than 1,100, health officials said Wednesday.

Officials in Hubei said they were broadening their definition for COVID-19 cases by including people "clinically diagnosed" with the virus in the daily tally.

The government of Hubei, the province at the outbreak's epicenter, dismissed the provincial health commission's Communist Party boss, state media said on Tuesday, amid mounting public anger over local authorities' handling of the crisis. Five British citizens were diagnosed with the coronavirus in France, after staying in the same ski chalet with a person who had been in Singapore.

Haven assets caught a bid, as the price of gold jumped, and the Japanese yen surged against the US dollar.

Information about the spread of the new coronavirus is becoming clearer, Ryan said at the World Health Organization news conference, with only eight cases worldwide in which the source of the transmission could not be explained.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva on Wednesday the apparent slowdown should be viewed with extreme caution, and that the outbreak could still go in any direction.

The jump raised the death toll to 1,355 and the total number of nationwide infections to almost 60,000 - just hours after President Xi Jinping touted "positive results" from the government's drastic measures to contain the virus and a top Chinese expert predicted the epidemic would peak this month.

China's National Health Commission is expected to release numbers for all of China's provinces later. "I thought: Is this real?"

Another 44 people aboard a cruise ship that has been quarantined for over a week in Japan's Yokohama harbor tested positive for coronavirus Thursday, Japanese health officials said.

There was a suggestion that from 7 February, people who had tested positive but showed no symptoms, were not counted as confirmed cases.

The ship has been turned away by the Philippines, Taiwan, Japan and Thailand, though its operator said no cases of the disease have been confirmed among the more than 2,200 passengers and crew.

By contrast, Andrew Collier, a managing director at Orient Capital Research in Hong Kong, said "we knew that there was a lot of bad testing going on, and that there was a lot of underreporting". The city of 11 million people remains under virtual lockdown, and other major Chinese cities are facing severe travel restrictions.

Murphy said the USA was coordinating with other foreign embassies as well.

The Mobile World Congress, an annual telecoms industry gathering that draws more than 100,000 visitors to Barcelona, was canceled on Wednesday after a mass exodus by exhibitors due to coronavirus-related concerns.

The Chinese Grand Prix was to have taken place in Shanghai from April 17 to 19.
