Boris Johnson's United Kingdom government reshuffle: Who's in and who's out?

Boris Johnson's new-look Cabinet assembles this morning, as Dominic Cummings continues Number 10's overhaul of Whitehall departments.

But the finance minister's resignation - which some commentators said might have been sought by Johnson's team - because of a dispute over Javid's advisers added to the picture that the prime minister will not tolerate dissent in his government.

He replied "No", before adding: "It's a new Government".

Great Yarmouth MP and former party chairman Brandon Lewis will take over from sacked minister Julian Smith as secretary of state for Northern Ireland.

In August, Cummings fired Javid's aide, Sonia Khan, and it appeared Number 10 wanted to go further in keeping a close eye on him, a move that had been preceded by Treasury briefings to the press about his support for HS2 and talk of a mansion tax in the forthcoming budget.

The former chancellor chose to quit instead and was replaced by his former deputy at the Treasury Rishi Sunak.

Javid, who became Chancellor of the Exchequer when Johnson succeeded Theresa May as prime minister in July, had been due to deliver his first budget in less than a month - a crucial staging post for the government in the wake of the country's departure from the European Union last month.

Erdogan threatens to hit Syrian regime forces 'anywhere' if Turkish troops hurt
Turkey's President Erdogan is warning that attacks by Syrian government forces on his military will be met with the same overwhelming response.

The PM demanded that Javid fire all five of his most senior aides and replace them with advisers loyal to No. 10 Downing Street. Every minister will be thinking "if the PM can do that to a chancellor, he can definitely do it to me".

Mr Javid accused the Prime Minister of setting conditions "any self-respecting minister" would reject - seen as a thinly veiled swipe at his successor.

Before the explosive meeting with Mr Johnson, Mr Javid had walked smiling into Number 10 in a sign that he expected to remain in place ahead of the March 11 Budget.

But along with the ministerial exits, the reshuffle - which Downing Street insiders had predicted would be "conventional" before the row with Mr Javid - saw promotions for MPs who are highly rated by Number 10.

Ultra-loyal Alok Sharma, a former minister for worldwide development, was appointed as the new minister for business and also the head of the COP26 climate change summit, when world leaders will travel to Scotland in November.

Ex-Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay replaces Sunak as treasury chief secretary.

Former defence secretary Penny Mordaunt returns to government as paymaster general in the Cabinet Office. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, Home Secretary Priti Patel, and Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove were among those staying in post.

Esther McVey lost her role as housing minister, and the total number of women attending Cabinet fell from eight to seven - while the total number of ministers attending shrank from 32 to 26.
