7.5 magnitude earthquake triggers tsunami warning

An natural disaster with a magnitude of 7.8 has occurred at approximately 4:59 HST in the vicinity of the Kuril Islands.

The US Geological Survey for its part estimated the strength of the quake at 7.5 magnitude.

"This quake has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami in the source region", it said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) warned the quake had the potential to generate destructive tsunami waves within 620 miles of the quake's epicenter.
