Andrew Cuomo: $2 trillion congressional deal would be 'terrible' for NY

Gov. Andrew Cuomo speaks during a news conference

"You pick the 26,000 people who are going to die because you only sent 400 ventilators", a visibly angry Mr. Cuomo chided Washington. The rate of infection is doubling every three days. Almost 1,300 patients were in intensive care, a 45% increase. Cuomo previously projected NY would need roughly 110,000 hospital beds, but now says the state would as many as 140,000. NY has also purchased 7,000 ventilators and is "still shopping", the governor said.

Asked about ventilators in New York, Cuomo bluntly said that there was no stockpile great enough to meet the state's needs, but that every option to get the devices was being pursued. He said 6,000 mental health professionals have also said they'll help with a telemedicine site to help people cope with stress. "That is what has happened". Just over 1,800 people have recovered from the virus in the US.

Could Upstate NY hospitals get downstate patients amid coronavirus?

Cuomo's daily live-streamed briefings from the epicenter of the nation's coronavirus outbreak have become must-watch events.

New York City reported 280 deaths by Wednesday evening, a leap from 199 deaths tallied earlier in the day, as hospitals were overwhelmed by a "cacophony of coughing" from Covid-19 cases.

The governor said it is an extraordinary time for the nation and the government, urging US leadership to put politics aside and partisanship aside.

"We are a coequal branch of government", said Stewart-Cousins who said she understand the need to be "nimble" given the fiscal uncertainties.

Shortages in personal protective equipment, such as masks and gloves, are no longer a primary concern, and Cuomo said the state has enough for the immediate future.

"We mourn the 385 New Yorkers we have lost to coronavirus-related illnesses", Cuomo said.

Bindi had forever planned on having her wedding at the Australia Zoo, with Bindi's younger brother walking her down the aisle. I hope we can share some love in the world, especially during this challenging time.

Cuomo said he now believes that the state could need as many 140,000 hospital beds in about three weeks as the number of new cases increases at a steep trajectory.

In the United States there are over 51,000 cases of the novel coronavirus and nearly half of those cases are in New York State.

Although the legislation would designate $3.8 billion for the state, Cuomo said that it would entail a revenue shortfall of at least $9 billion because the response to the outbreak has already cost the state $1 billion.

NY is facing $10 billion to $15 billion in lost revenue due to the coronavirus.

Confirmed cases are rising even faster in neighboring New Jersey.

The state follows a 180-day instructional requirement. Additional beds are coming from an array of efforts: hospitals in the state boosting existing capacity; opening new facilities with the help of FEMA and other federal agencies; converting college dormitories to makeshift hospitals; and a U.S. Navy Ship, Comfort, which is en route to the state.

Cuomo has said that NY has between 3,000 and 4,000 ventilators. He estimated that at $10 billion to $15 billion.

"There's going to be a decision on whether to extend the closure", James Malatras, president of SUNY Empire College said during a press conference Thursday. By Wednesday night, the number of coronavirus fatalities had climbed to 280, up 81 from the number reported hours earlier when the statewide death toll stood at 285. Roughly 122,000 people have been tested in all.

At a news conference, Cuomo said the city also would ban basketball and other contact sports in public parks, while lamenting the challenges posed by dense populations.
