Clap for our carers: National round of applause planned for 8pm tonight

Clap for our carers campaign

The UK's campaign started online, and is expected to be supported by hundreds of thousands of people tonight.

People across the country are being encouraged to take part in a national salute to honour the hardworking NHS staff at the forefront of the battle against coronavirus.

It took place at 8pm on Thursday from the nation's doorsteps, windows, gardens and balconies.

The Labour Party tweeted: "Night and day, NHS and social care workers are working heroically to protect us from the #coronavirus outbreak".

Coronavirus cases surpass 60000 in USA; Spain death toll overtakes China
In Europe, companies are laying off workers at the fastest pace since 2009, according to surveys of business managers. Most of those victims were in hard-hit New York City, where hospitals have been overwhelmed by a surge in patients.

At 8pm everyone is being encouraged to stand at their front doors, windows and balconies and give a collective round of applause to honour the NHS staff now working so hard to protect us all.

Join us to create a wave of positivity for our friends in the NHS and let's really make a difference - as we applaud our NHS heroes this Thursday at 8pm on Capital XTRA.

Isle of Wight Radio is proud to support the '#ClapForOurCarers' initiative, which hopes to see us all join together for a round of applause all who are working around the clock to keep us safe and fight coronavirus.

"The best thing we can do - apart from staying at home - is to use our skills and networks to say thank you to everyone who is supporting the NHS and risking their own health to help others during this pandemic". Me, Jade and the whole family will #clapforourcarers this evening at 8pm.
