Huawei's P40 Series Is All About the Cameras

Huawei P40 and P40 Pro announced with 50MP ‘UltraVision’ Leica camera

Huawei has had a tumultuous six months since the unveiling of the Huawei P30 series, but it is now showing off its next top-end flagship phone in the form of the Huawei P40.

The images from Agarwal suggest the P40 Pro could come with a quad-curved display, meaning it could have curvature on its sides, top and bottom.

Elsewhere, battery figures range from 3800mAh in the Huawei P40 to 4200mAh in the P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus - somewhere between the Samsung S20s (4200-500mAh) and Google Pixel 4s (2800mAh-3700mAh). All three phones also have dual front cameras. The P40 and P40 Pro are available in Ice White, Black, DeepSea Blue, Silver Frost, Blush Gold, while the P40 Pro+ is only available in black and white.

The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro will make their debut in some regions on 7th April for €799 and €999 respectively, while the P40 Pro Plus will follow in June for €1399. Storage is once again expandable via the Nano Memory 2 card.

And even when it comes to the main two handsets - the P40 and P40 Pro - they, for now at least, seem to only be available from a small number of retailers, both in terms of SIM-fee and contract deals. The P40 Pro will go for $1,499 and will be sold at JB Hi-fi and Officeworks. With all that in mind, it's not the best time to launch a range of new products, but that hasn't stopped the Chinese company from forging ahead with its latest flagship series. But Huawei's global sales have been hurt by the inability of Huawei's phones to run these apps. The duo also supports a 90Hz refresh rate. The phone is powered by the octa-core Kirin 990 5G SoC, Mali-G76 MC16 GPU. It also brings back the RYYB sensor technology introduced on last year's P30 Pro. There will be a Leica Ultra Vision triple camera set-up with a 50-megapixel primary camera sat next to a 16-megapixel lens and an 8-megapixel lens.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ also boasts improved specifications compared to the P40 Pro and P40.

For the display, you are getting a 6.1-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2340×1080 pixels on the regular P40 and a 6.58-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2640×1200 pixels on the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+.

Both phones run on Huawei's Kirin 990 5G processor, and are packed with 8GB RAM and a very generous 256GB of onboard storage.

The P40 Pro sports four lenses on its camera array and includes a time-of-flight depth sensor for improved bokeh effects. On the subject of video recording, the front-facing 32MP sensor can also manage 4K shooting and has autofocus - still a rarity among today's selfie cameras. Storage wise there will be an option of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB and NanoMemory-2 standard storage expansion. It shares the same connectivity options.

In the case of the P40 and P40 Pro, you're mainly looking at a bigger screen, bigger battery, wireless charging and better camera. The phone is 158.2x72.6x8.95mm in size and weighs 209 grams, making it quite a bit heavier than the Huawei P40 5G.

The Huawei P40 Pro+ features a penta rear-camera setup carrying a 50MP primary OIS camera clubbed with a 40MP ultra wide cine lens, 8MP 3x optical telephoto lens with OIS, a ToF depth sensing lens, and an 8MP periscope-style lens with OIS and 10x optical zoom.

It has almost the same dimensions, at 158.2x72.6x9mm and weighs a little more, at 226 grams. It's also pushed boundaries with charging, and the Pro models continue this by allowing up to 40W wireless charging.
