Instacart buyers plan pandemic treatment strike

Amazon, Instacart Grocery Delivery Workers Strike For Coronavirus Protection And Pay

Instacart grocery delivery workers across the U.S. and Amazon warehouse workers in Staten Island, New York, plan to go on strike today.

Time.com reports that workers for the grocery delivery service are becoming increasingly anxious about their health as cities go into lockdown due to the Wuhan coronavirus pandemic.

Some Instacart shoppers are planning to strike on Monday, accusing the company of not providing them enough protections during the coronavirus pandemic.

Both strikes occur as Amazon and Instacart have advertised the need to hire thousands of workers in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. According to the company, they've seen a 150 percent increase in orders, and this sounds like a good thing, but Instacart workers are scared.

"I'm grateful to have some way to make money", said Summer Cooper, 39, who started working as an Instacart shopper in the Tampa Bay, Florida, area recently after losing her position as a server at a hotel restaurant.

The grocery delivery service has become a vital resource for some as the novel coronavirus continues to spread in the United States, the country with the most cases in the world.

Shoppers said they had been asking for sanitizer for "many, many weeks", but the company was only now conceding to this demand.

These concessions came after Instacart said earlier this month that part-time shoppers would be able to accrue sick pay and that workers could get up to 14 days of sick pay if they tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, or were placed into mandatory quarantine or isolation by a government health agency.

Dr Arabia Mollette, an emergency medicine physician at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn and St. As of Monday, there have been 137,000 recorded cases of coronavirus across the United States with over 2,400 deaths.

The grocery delivery service says it will provide hand sanitizer to its full-service shoppers.

Employees of McDonald's Corp, as well as people who said they worked at Walmart Inc, Harris Teeter, Waffle House, Family Dollar and Food Lion, boycotted work at North Carolina locations on Friday.

Instacart's army of grocery delivery workers are not employees, but independent contractors.

In addition to extending pay protections to May, Instacart is offering bonuses between $25 and $200 to in-store shoppers, shift leads, and site managers. While Instacart has addressed some of the demands, the company has not met all of them.

They also demanded that Intacart raise the tip default in its app to 10% from the current 5%. Instacart previously rolled out retroactive sick pay for in-store shoppers.

But rush of hiring is likely to dilute any attempts by existing workers to organize walk-offs.

"There's a tsunami of unemployed people who lost wages in the last two weeks".

Instacart is one of several companies delivering essentials to households and now expanding rapidly at a time when much of the American economy is at risk of contracting.
