Spain reports 8,189 deaths and 94,417 Covid-19 cases

Spain enforced even tighter stay-at-home rules on Monday for its 47 million people, as the country overtook China as the nation with the thirdhighest number of reported infections in the world, after the U.S. and Italy.

In Italy, the hardest-hit country in Europe, the cumulative number of cases reached 101,739, while the death toll rose to 11,591.

The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus climbed past 3,500 Tuesday, eclipsing China's official count, as the deepening crisis in NY hit close to home for the governor, who announced with tears in his eyes that his brother, CNN anchor Chris Cuomo, has become infected.

Spain witnessed a new record number of deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, according to a daily update published Tuesday by the Spanish Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services.

Three-quarters of a million people worldwide have become infected and more than 37,000 have died, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University.

In California, officials put out a similar call for medical volunteers as coronavirus hospitalisations doubled in the past four days and the number of patients in intensive care tripled.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. In Wuhan, people were ready to jump, cry and "revenge shop" as the Chinese city once at the center of the outbreak reopened.

In Serbia, Hungary and other states, concerns were rising that populist leaders may use the situation as an opportunity to seize more power and silence critics. Spain halted all but essential economic activity on Tuesday.

In Japan, officials announced a new date for the Tokyo Olympics - from July 23 to Aug 8 of next year - as a spike in reported infections fuelled suspicions that the government was understating the extent of the country's outbreak in recent weeks while it was still hoping to salvage the Games.
