1.9 million New Yorkers left jobless during coronavirus pandemic

Another week, another staggering number of people filing for unemployment benefits in the United States.

MI saw a decrease in the number of people filing for unemployment, according to the latest numbers released by the U.S. Labor Department.

Thursday's report, reflecting the week ending May 9, has office, retail and production sector employees leading the state's jobless claims.

How much is unemployment insurance helping? . That rate is not the same as the widely understood monthly unemployment rate, which stands at 6.3 percent because it has not been updated to account for the weeks of the most widespread pandemic-induced economic pain.

Commenting on the jobless figures, state Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon said, "Every state is facing a historic surge in unemployment claims and NY is no different, but we have moved faster and more aggressively than others to get beneficiaries their money, and in just over two months have paid out over three-and-a-half years' worth of benefits".

Mysterious disease affecting children linked to coronavirus
Multisystem inflammatory sydrome in children was previously called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Six of those confirmed also tested positive for the coronavirus , Persichilli said.

The state paid out almost $95 million in regular state unemployment benefits in the week ending May 9, as well as $160 million in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation - the $600 payments on top of regular benefits. Looking at the data through that lens, which compares people on unemployment divided by a state's labor force, shows California now has an insured unemployment rate above 27%.

CDLE Deputy Executive Director Cher Haavind said officials still believe that initial claims have peaked but that benefit payments were still at record amounts.

Still, 462,396 initial claims have been filed in the year 2020, mostly during the pandemic period.

A total of 13,075 Iowans were paid a total of $7,010,336.34 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits during the week ending on May 2. That federally authorized program offers payments to people who traditionally don't qualify for benefits, such as independent contractors, gig workers and the self-employed.

Moreover, the weekly headline jobless claims number does not fully capture the historic stress sweeping the United States labour market because it does not include self-employed and gig workers who only became eligible for unemployment benefits under the recently passed congressional virus-aid packages.
