Canadian researchers help Tesla build new 'million-mile' battery

News Tesla’s Elon Musk posts Battery Day update hints at online and live event

News of a new "million-mile" battery comes two weeks after Tesla cut the price of its China-made standard range Model 3 sedan to less than 300,000 yuan ($42,000) in order to meet the eligibility requirements of China's new-energy vehicle subsidies.

The battery is designed for so-called "second-life" applications in energy storage after automotive use, while the cars it powers will be able to discharge power back into the grid, according to Reuters.

New, low-priced batteries created to last for a million miles of use and enable electric Teslas to sell profitably for the same price or less than a gasoline vehicle are just part of Musk's agenda, people familiar with the plans told Reuters.

Jeff Dahn and his research team presented testing results of "excellent moderate-energy-density lithium-ion pouch cell chemistry" that should be able to power an electric vehicle for over 1.6 million kilometers (1 million miles) and last at least two decades in grid energy storage. The new battery is said to leverage low-cobalt and cobalt-free battery chemistries, plus chemical additives, materials, and coatings, all of which should help reduce stress and allow the battery to store more energy, longer. Ltd (CATL). Reuters reports the first cars with the new battery will be released in China, which is a market in which Tesla wants to gain a foothold. Cobalt, one of the most expensive metals for batteries, is a key reason why EVs are still more expensive than vehicles with internal combustion engines.

Feds extend wage subsidy to end of August
More than 7.5 million Canadians have received CERB payments so far - nearly double the anticipated number of recipients. He said Ottawa will work with businesses and labour groups over the next month on any adjustments that may be required.

Tesla is also considering new high-speed, highly automated battery manufacturing processes as part of efforts to reduce labor costs and increase production capacity, Reuters quoted the sources as saying.

CATL also has developed a simpler and less expensive way of packaging battery cells, called cell-to-pack, that eliminates the middle step of bundling cells. Per the sources, the new battery's cells could cost less than $60 per kilowatt-hour. Dahn's research will heavily contribute to batteries with a longer lifespan.

The Reuters report also claims Tesla is continuing to ramp up its battery recycling capabilities through its Redwood Materials affiliate now headed by JB Straubel.

Tesla has been working with Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.
