Another 2.4M Workers File First-Time Jobless Claims

Jobless claims: Another 2.4 million Americans expected to have filed for unemployment benefits

South Dakota's unemployment rate for April soared to more than 10 percent; but recently, the number of people filing initial unemployment claims has dropped. This is nearly 5,000 less than the week prior. Specifically, most states in recent weeks have seen substantial decreases in weekly claims.

Initial jobless claims for regular state programs totaled 2.44 million in the week ended May 16, Labor Department figures showed Thursday.

The number of unemployed NY residents increased by 931,600, while the labor force (the total number of people working or looking for work) dropped by 307,600 - both monthly records.

The state has processed another 20,801 claims but hasn't released those benefits because individuals haven't submitted federally mandated weekly certifications. That sent the insured unemployment rate, or the number of people now receiving unemployment insurance as a share of the total eligible labor market, to 17.2 per cent for that period.

More than one-half of the region's jobless workers - 102,000 - are in Allegheny County. That's down from 65,805 people who filed for benefits the week before that.

Claims have been gradually declining since hitting a record 6.867 million in the week ended March 28.

Almost half of Americans say that either their incomes have declined or they live with another adult who has lost pay through a job loss or reduced hours, the Census Bureau said in survey data released Wednesday More than one-fifth of Americans said they had little or no confidence in their ability to pay the next month's rent or mortgage on time, the survey found.

Briem predicted the jobless rate will be around 16%, depending on how numerous unemployed workers are captured in the data.

On an non-seasonally adjusted basis, initial claims were 2.17 million last week, following 2.36 million the prior week.

New York's unemployment rate shot to 14.5% in April, from 4.1% in March, the largest monthly increase since current record-keeping began in 1976.
