UK Spearheads Largest Multinational Trial of Hydroxychloroquine in Battle Against Coronavirus

Trump lashes out at scientists who contradict him

Trump first announced on Monday that he was taking the antimalarial drug, adding that he consulted with the White House physician before starting the treatment.

The announcement may give satisfaction to President Trump, who was slammed by left-liberal politicians and commentators when he revealed that he was taking hydroxychloroquine as a possible preventative.

The president - who has repeatedly touted hydroxychloroquine - suggested many medical workers were also taking the drug.

HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used to prevent malaria in areas where the disease remains sensitive to chloroquine.

"I would point out however that at this stage [neither] hydroxychloroquine nor chloroquine have been as yet found to be effective in the treatment of COVID-19 or in the prophylaxis against coming down with the disease", he added. Evidence for such use now lacks with concerns of potential harms from side effects.

On Monday night, Chris Cuomo questioned whether Trump truly was taking hydroxychloroquine, saying he believed it was "a handsome distraction" that "speaks to optimism" about reopening the country.

"You had Chris Cuomo saying the president knows that hydroxychloroquine is not supported by science, he knows it has been flagged by his own people and he's using it", McEnany said at a White House press briefing.

Last month, the American Medical Association, American Pharmacists Association and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists issued a joint statement opposing the use of hydroxychloroquine, among other drugs, for Covid-19 prevention.

Miracle Drug? | President Trump may be taking it, but results are inconclusive on hydroxychloroquine

"I work with a lot of doctors", Trump insisted.

The study, which observed over 96,000 people hospitalised with COVID-19, showed that people treated with the drug, or the closely related drug chloroquine, had higher risk of death when compared to those who had not been given the medicine.

Two large observational studies, each involving around 1,400 patients in NY, however, also recently found no benefit from the drug.

"Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are already FDA-approved for treating malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis".

"I asked him, "what do you think?' He said, 'well, if you'd like it", I said, 'yeah, I'd like it'".

"I think there are real dangers", he said, "for the president to play scientist and doctor on TV". The same media that is now going hysterical about the president taking hydroxychloroquine.

The University of Oxford-led study, kicking off Thursday, will test over 40,0000 frontline health workers in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, testing at 25 sites in Britain alone, according to Reuters.

He did not mention a name but the description fits that of Vladimir Zelenko, a NY doctor who has promoted hydroxy as a coronavirus treatment and has been touted by Fox News host Sean Hannity.
