Haven't used Netflix in a while? Your subscription could get canceled

Netflix See What's Event In Rome

"The same applies to accounts that have stopped watching content on Netflix for over two years", Netflix said in a statement.

Netflix will soon start cancelling subscriptions on inactive accounts - so if you signed up ages ago, binged watched season one of Stranger Things and then forgot all about your subscription, expect an email.

The numbers - released in late April as part of Netflix´s first-quarter earnings report - support a growing belief that video streaming is likely to thrive despite economic downturns worldwide. Notifications will start arriving this week.

Brazil erratic strategy to combat Covid-19: advocates the use of chloroquine
The number of cases reported in the country is usually highest mid-week, as laboratories resume full testing capacity after the weekend.

With a message, Netflix will notify you that you have been without using its platform all that time, but you have been paying for it and that it will cancel your subscription.

He goes on to note that while this is an important move for the company to take, only a small amount of subscribers are classified by Netflix as inactive. Of course, re-enabling a membership it is as easy as always. However, if the user missed the given notification, Netflix will automatically cancel their subscription. Notably, subs who cancel and rejoin the service within ten months will still be able to retain their profiles, favorites and other viewing preferences.

According to a post from Netflix director of product innovation Eddy Wu, accounts like this represent less than 0.5 percent of their subscriber base, representing "only a few hundred thousand". To put that into perspective, Netflix reported in April it had almost 183 million total subscriptions, a number that includes the roughly 16 million new subscriptions it's added in recent months during the coronavirus pandemic. On the back of surging numbers of viewers during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Netflix had 182.9 million paid memberships globally as of end-Q1 2020.
