National Football League to vote on wild alternative to onside kick for 2020 season

NFL To Vote On Major Rule Changes

A proposal suggests that teams should be allowed to try a 4th-and-15 play in lieu of an onside kick.

There are seven rule changes that will be considered next week during the virtual owners meetings.

Support is growing for a change proposed by the Philadelphia Eagles that would permit a fourth-and-15 offensive play from the kicking team's 25-yard line as an alternative to onside kicks, NFL.com's Judy Battista reports.

There have been some amendments to the rule since it was first submitted by the Eagles. It is important to note that teams would be allowed to do this no more than twice per game, so it's not like it would create a make-it, take-it type of keep-away game.

WFAN's Mike Francesa is on board with that change, tweeting "I think the National Football League should adopt the alternative to the onside kick this season".

Proposed NFL onside kick change would see teams try 4th-and-15 play instead

The Philadelphia Eagles have proposed an alternative to the onside kick, which has become far more hard to successfully execute thanks to new configuration regulations that promote health and safety. In that same time span, five of 14 (36 percent) fourth-and-15 attempts were converted.

For teams with lesser talent at the QB position, this rule could certainly put them at a disadvantage.

On Wednesday, owners will vote virtually on whether they like their chances with onside kicks or fourth-and-15s. Be sure to let us know your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter. The teams also have proposed adding a senior technology advisor to the referee to assist the crew.

Expanding defenseless player protection to a kickoff or punt returner who is in possession of the ball but who has not had time to avoid or ward off impending contact by an opponent.

- By the Competition Committee, to amend Rule 4, Section 3, Article 2, to prevent teams from manipulating the game clock by committing multiple dead-ball fouls while the clock is running.
