U.S. Ambassador to Germany Grenell to step down: German media

The outward bound United States ambassador to Berlin, Richard Grenell, has actually blasted a legislator who called out his "hostile" position in the direction ofGermany The envoy said he simply adhered to Washington's plans and also safeguarded American rate of interests.

During his short stint as acting DNI, Grenell made a number of big moves, including declassifying information about Obama administration officials who were behind the "unmasking" of Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

The 53-year-old had said in February that he wished to remain in the role of Washington's top diplomat in Berlin, but rumors began circulating about a possible departure, when right-wing online magazine The Daily Wire said Grenell had spoken about it with President Donald Trump. At that time though, there was no official confirmation either from the White House or from the embassy in Berlin.

Grenell, who was nominated in September 2017 to be USA ambassador to Germany, was called back to Washington earlier this year to serve as acting Director of National Intelligence to replace Joseph Maguire, who was also serving in a temporary role as head of US intelligence.

World Health Organization halts hydroxychloroquine trial after study finds no benefit for COVID-19
Other treatments in the trial , including the experimental drug remdesivir and an HIV combination therapy, are still being tested. The US Food and Drug Administration had earlier warned of potential side effects of the drug if it is used in COVID-19 patients.

President Donald Trump in February called Grenell back to Washington to take over as head of US intelligence on an interim basis, replacing former acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire.

An embassy spokesperson declined to comment on the dpa report. Fiercely loyal to Donald Trump, Grenell has spent his tenure actively advocating the president's foreign policy vision. The ambassador has repeatedly volunteered unsolicited "advice" to Berlin on a range of policy issues, be it Germany's trade with Iran, relations with Russian Federation or insufficient contribution to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation budget.

Despite being criticized by many German politicians, the USA ambassador is said to have had a good relationship with German Health Minister Jens Spahn, of Angela Merkel's conservative CDU.
