Huawei's order for MediaTek chips up 300% this year

Apart from this the other order which is for the 12nm chipset is also likely to go through. The 12nm chips are for 5G base stations

Also, this means Huawei will be unable to order new wafers from its primary chip supplier TSMC although they have reserved 5 nm nodes from TSMC for its upcoming Kirin 1020. Huawei has also previously worked with third-party mobile chip suppliers, but the previous share is small and the number of chips it has purchased overseas will grow significantly this year, especially for MediaTek, the world's second-largest supplier of mobile phone chips after Qualcomm.

But this time, Huawei will be using MediaTek's premium 7 nm based 5G chipsets like Dimensity 1000, Dimensity 800 as well.

A few sources close to the industry also pointed out that Huawei had already received 5G base stations and mobile processor 5nm chips from TSMC, even before the USA sanctions had been proposed.

Trump delivers remarks after Space X launch
President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are expected to be in attendance at the Kennedy Space Center for the launch. It will mark the first time in history that a commercial aerospace company has carried humans into Earth's orbit.

Huawei also seeks to deepen its collaboration with UNISOC, a Beijing-backed mobile chip developer that relies mostly on smaller device makers as customers and mainly supports entry-level products and devices for emerging markets.

Huawei predominantly uses its in-house Kirin chips in its smartphones, at least until now. The 12nm chips are for 5G base stations.

The new procurement deals could help UNISOC further upgrade its chip design capability. More recently, the company received CNY 4.5 billion (USD 630 million) from China's national integrated circuit fund, the so-called Big Fund. At the moment, MediaTek has declined to comment on this situation or the rumors.
