Hundreds in USA demand justice for George Floyd

4 US cops sacked after black man George Floyd dies in Minneapolis as one of them kneels on his neck

A citizen's cellphone video showed an officer-who has since been identified as 44-year-old Derek Chuavin-kneeling on Floyd's neck for nearly 8 minutes as the man repeatedly said he could not breathe and begged officers not to kill him. A woman on the scene filmed the incident, showing Floyd handcuffed and on the ground with Officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on the back of his neck, and pleading: "Please, I can't breathe".

Fires burned and looters struck Thursday after violent protests over the death of a black man in police custody rocked a Minneapolis neighbourhood for a second straight night, with damage stretching for miles across the city and Mayor Jacob Frey appealing to the governor to activate the National Guard.

In Los Angeles, California, hundreds of people marched to protest Floyd's death and police brutality, and reportedly shattered windows of California Highway Patrol cruisers on Wednesday.

The four officers involved in the arrest of George Floyd, 46, on Monday have been fired, and prosecutors are investigating. "They have to be held more fully accountable, including the FBI investigation and an independent Department of Justice civil rights investigation, because we have to get to the root of all of this".

"Justice historically has never come to fruition through some of the acts we're seeing tonight, whether it's the looting, the damage to property or other things", he said.

Surveillance video from a nearby restaurant shows the first contact that police had with George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Police said in their statement this week that officers "noted (Floyd) appeared to be suffering medical distress" and called an ambulance.

"How many "while black" deaths will it take until the racial profiling and undervaluing of black lives by police finally ends?"

Floyd's family has retained high-profile attorney Benjamin Crump, who has represented several black individuals killed during confrontations with police.

Players Association plans to propose longer season, insist on full prorated salaries
On Tuesday, owners presented the players with a compensation proposal for a shortened season that would begin in early July. That plan featured significant pay cuts on top of the salary reductions the union agreed to two months ago.

Mr Floyd's death comes on the heels of two other deaths of African-Americans that involved police wrongdoing.

Floyd was taken to the hospital here he was pronounced dead. "For five minutes, we watched as a white officer pressed his knee into the neck of a black man", Mr Frey said.

His family deserves justice.

The Garner case was one of a series of killings of black men by USA police officers that fueled the "Black Lives Matter" movement, which campaigns against violence toward black people and systemic racism. "Not one of them tried to do anything to help him", said Tera Brown, Floyd's cousin.

Frey did not say what charge was appropriate for the officer, but said he has relayed his wish to Freeman.

He said Floyd "may not have even known that the bill was counterfeit".

Footage of the killing circulated the internet, galvanising Black communities across the U.S. and sparking fierce protests in Minneapolis.
