A federal law enforcement officer in California who was shot and killed at the us courthouse in Oakland during a protest for George Floyd that turned violent has been identified as 53-year-old Patrick Underwood, his family confirmed to Fox News.

"Two Federal Protective Services officers stationed at the Oakland Down Town Federal Building suffered gunshot wounds".

Homeland Security Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli said in a press conference "there are now threats by some to attack police stations and federal buildings".

The force declared the protest an unlawful assembly after multiple officers were injured when projectiles were thrown, according to the department's Twitter post shortly before 10 p.m. local time.

Officers around the country have been facing a barrage of violent attacks in recent days since the death of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died after a former Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for over eight minutes. Reports detailed Friday night's incident, when a auto pulled up outside the federal building in Oakland and someone opened fire. One officer was killed, the other is in critical condition...

A suspect hasn't been named and it wasn't immediately known whether authorities have determined if the shooting was connected with the protest.

The Federal Protective Service is part of the Department of Homeland Security and is tasked with protecting government buildings.

"There are now threats by some to attack police stations and federal buildings, Cuccinelli said". A white officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter as a result of the incident.

In Los Angeles, police arrested more than 500 people after protests led to a night and morning of vandalism and looting on the streets of downtown L.A. The LAPD spent much of Friday night and Saturday morning trying to clear the streets as people smashed windows, stole items from stores, clashed with police and set items, including at least two LAPD vehicles, on fire.

The identity of the officer has not yet been disclosed.

Interim Chief of Police Susan Manheimer shared a message to social media Saturday morning, urging more Californians to join the protests and keep them peaceful.
