Biden campaign slams Trump for 'outrageous' remarks on slowing coronavirus testing

US President Donald Trump loves holding rallies

Eric Trump, the son of President Donald Trump, waves to supporters before a rally in Tulsa, Okla., Saturday, June 20, 2020.

The efforts to disrupt the rally numbers appear to have been started by Mary Jo Laupp, who on June 11 posted her anger at Mr Trump initially arranging the rally for the day of Juneteenth - a holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States - in a city where a racist massacre took place in 1921.

Thousands of people, many wearing MAGA hats and waving American flags, arrived at Tulsa's Bank of Oklahoma Center arena, while a group of protesters chanted "Black lives matter" near one of the site's entrances.

The smaller-than-expected crowd robbed him, at least for now, of the ability to highlight enthusiasm for his candidacy as an advantage over his expected Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden, who has eschewed large campaign events.

"You are warriors. We had some very bad people outside".

Publicly, Trump's team scrambled to blame the crowd size on media coverage and protesters outside the venue, but the small crowds of pre-rally demonstrators were largely peaceful.

The Trump campaign said the entry was "first-come-first-serve" and that no one was issued an actual ticket.

"Sadly, protestors interfered with supporters, even blocking access to the metal detectors, which prevented people from entering the rally", Murtaugh said in a statement. Trump said, "We got another one over here".

During his speech, Mr Trump also claimed that "the silent majority is stronger than ever before".

But the narrative of a trouble-free campaign event was punctured Saturday when the campaign announced that six members of its Tulsa advance team tested positive for coronavirus. Trump is scheduled to speak to an overflow crowd outside at 4 p.m. PT before heading inside the BOK Center for the main event at 5 p.m.

It was not clear from Trump's tone if he was playing to the crowd, who cheered as he spoke, or if he was being serious.

"The White House claims they weren't involved in the set-up there. that they're now in quarantine."

The Saturday rally also came as USA states and cities have begun removing statues of Confederate figures amid a national reckoning over police brutality and racism sparked by the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, who died on May 25 after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for almost nine minutes.

But reporters on the ground said they saw no problems for people trying to get in.

It's been more than three months since Trump's last rally, and the president has been restless while cooped up in the White House as the coronavirus limited travel and public gatherings.

President Donald Trump launched his comeback rally Saturday by defining the upcoming election as a stark choice between national heritage and left-wing radicalism. The technological savvy of their generation has turned political: they knew that the Trump campaign harvests information from ticket reservations, bombarding applicants with texts and requests for donations.

"I think it's mostly a hoax", attendee Will Williams, 46, said of the coronavirus, questioning why Democrats were not more concerned about people who die from drug overdoses.

Crowds gathered Saturday morning at the arena's entrance gate, including Don Engle, the treasurer of neighboring Creek County.

The campaign handed out masks and hand sanitizer, but there was no requirement that participants use them and few did.
