Ontario reports 175 new coronavirus cases, 11 deaths; total cases near 33,500

Toronto Public Health announced 53 new coronavirus cases Saturday, bringing the total number of cases so far to 13,768.

One day after recording a slight spike, Ontario has dipped back down to fewer than 200 new COVID-19 cases.

Meanwhile, a total of 23,408 tests were completed on Saturday. "Yesterday, Ontario processed a new record number of tests in a single day: 27,387".

Another 31 people have died over the last day bringing the province's total of people who have passed away from the virus to 2,595.

The number of people now hospitalized in Ontario with COVID-19 sits at 333, with 80 people being cared for in an intensive care unit (ICU). The website says 63 patients are now using ventilators.

As of Friday night, Canada was reporting 100,629 confirmed cases of COVID-19, an increase of 409 from the previous report. Around 15,400 cases are under investigation. Peel Public Health says 216 deaths have occurred in Mississauga. Of those, 28,468 cases have recovered, or 85.5 per cent.

According to Peel's website, 464 COVID-19 patients have had to be hospitalized.

Health Sciences North had none of these confirmed cases in its care as of June 19, but did two unconfirmed cases in its Intensive Care Unit along with seven unconfirmed cases in other units.

The increase in cases is the largest Ontario has reported this week, after going six straight days of recording under 200 cases.
