"Family Guy" Star Mike Henry Will No Longer Voice Cleveland Brown Character

White voice actor Mike Henry announced this weekend that he will be stepping down from his role as Cleveland, a Black character, on Fox's Family Guy, a role he also played in the spin-off The Cleveland Show.

Henry wrote on Twitter that he will stop playing the show's main African American character because "persons of color should play characters of color". That decision came months after Hank Azaria said he would no longer voice the popular "Simpsons" character Apu, which had been criticized as a racist, stereotypical and demeaning portrayal of South Asian people.

But "Family Guy" also has other nonwhite characters voiced by White actors, including Tricia Takanawa, voiced by Alex Borstein, who also voices matriarch Lois Griffin.

For instance, Jenny Slate said she wouldn't voice Big Mouth's Missy anymore, and just a few hours after, Kristen Bell, from Central Park, stated she was going to step down from her role as Molly.

India sees highest single-day spike of 19,906 COVID-19 cases
India recorded close to 20,000 Covid-19 cases in a single day for the first time on Sunday, taking the tally to 5,28,859. As of Saturday, there are 6,685 active COVID-19 cases in Uttar Pradesh.

Henry said he wanted to give the opportunity to play the character to a black actor. But now, she understands that her initial thoughts were wrong.

"I acknowledge how my original reasoning was flawed, that it existed as an example of white privilege and unjust allowances made within a system of societal white supremacy, and that in me playing 'Missy, ' I was engaging in an act of erasure of Black people".

"It's been an honour to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years", he tweeted this week.
