Gilead prices COVID-19 drug candidate remdesivir at $2340 per patient

Gilead slaps multi-thousand-dollar price tag on coronavirus treatment remdesivir

A Wall Street Journal analysis shows the typical hospital patient with commercial insurance would be charged $3,120 for an average course of treatment, but what the consumer ends up paying would depend on their health benefits coverage.

The 250,000 treatment courses that Gilead had donated to the US and other countries will run out in about a week, and the prices will apply to the drug after that. The report stated that the USA government confirmed on Monday, June 23, that it will supply 500,000 additional courses to hospitals through September, which will be produced by Gilead beginning in July.

According to Bloomberg's latest report, the US government and other developed countries will be charged $390 per vial of remdesivir, which is a total cost of $2,340 for a typical 5-day course of treatment.

The prices are roughly in line with those an influential US drug cost watchdog pegged on the drug in its latest cost-effectiveness analysis, but came below the sticker Wall Street was expecting.

HHS has secured more than 500,000 treatment courses of the drug for USA hospitals through September, the agency said on Monday. The cost would be $390 per dose, which works out to $2.340 for the shortest treatment period.

Remdesivir's price has been a topic of intense debate since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its emergency use in some COVID-19 patients in May.

The per-vial price outside of private insurance will be $390, Gilead added. "This degree of speculation is understandable", Gilead CEO Daniel O'Day said in an open letter.

India sees highest single-day spike of 19,906 COVID-19 cases
India recorded close to 20,000 Covid-19 cases in a single day for the first time on Sunday, taking the tally to 5,28,859. As of Saturday, there are 6,685 active COVID-19 cases in Uttar Pradesh.

Now the finalized price is "a responsible decision from Gilead and a promising sign for pricing decisions of other treatments for COVID-19 on the horizon", ICER's president, Steven D. Pearson, said in a Monday statement.

The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, a nonprofit group that analyzes drug prices, said remdesivir would be cost-effective in a range of $4,580 to $5,080 if it saved lives.

In this March 2020 photo provided by Gilead Sciences, a vial of the investigational drug remdesivir is visually inspected at a Gilead manufacturing site in the United States. They explained Monday that the federal government has secured a lot more than 500,000 extra classes that Gilead will make commencing in July to source to hospitals by means of September.

O'Day said pricing of the drug was a balancing act.

By the end of 2020, Gilead said it expected to have invested more than $1bn on the development and manufacture of remdesivir, "and our commitment to will continue through 2021 and beyond", O'Day said.

It is also being evaluated in combination with Roche's arthritis treatment Actemra for severe coronavirus cases.

Though no figure was given, the company stated that developing countries, where the drug has been licensed to generic manufacturers, will pay significantly less.
