Iran issues arrest warrant for US President Trump

Iran Issues Arrest Warrant for President Trump, Asks For Interpol Assistance

He died in an USA airstrike in Baghdad.

Iran's state-run news agency IRNA reports the officials wanted in connection with Soleimani's killing "have been charged with murder and terrorism acts".

A US government spokesperson claimed that Monday's decision to issue an arrest warrant for Trump was more of the same and a mere face-saving measure for the Iranian government.

Mehr claimed Trump would be prosecuted as soon as he stands down presidency after his term ends, Fars reported.

Alqasimehr said Interpol was asked to put out a "red notice" on Trump and the other defendants.

Interpol, based in Lyon, France, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Interpol later issued a statement saying its guidelines for notices forbids it from "any intervention or activities of a political" nature and that it "would not consider requests" of this kind.

The U.S. airstrike that killed Soleimani was championed by Defense Secretary Mark Esper as a "decisive defensive action".

The killing of Soleimani, who headed the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, provoked massive outpourings of grief at home.

A retaliatory attack by Iran came on Jan 8, just days after the US airstrike.

In the early hours of January 8, the IRGC fired dozens of ballistic missiles at a military airbase hosting USA forces in Iraq as part of its promised "tough revenge" for the US terrorist attack.

Tehran Prosecutor General Ali Alqasi-Mehr has said that 36 individuals have been identified in connection with the USA assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani. However, the charges underscore the heightened tensions between Iran and the United States since Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers.

Washington accused Soleimani of masterminding attacks by Iranian-aligned militias on USA forces in the region. Iran envoy Brian Hook said the warrant was a " propaganda stunt " at a news conference in Saudi Arabia.
