Kansas State athletes, officials decry student's Floyd tweet

College football team threatens boycott over white nationalist student’s George Floyd joke

"A policy created against racism that will expel any student that openly displays racism on all platforms such as, social media, school, Aggieville and sporting events", the statements reads.

McNeil, who has more than 24,000 followers on Twitter, has since retweeted numerous posts in support of him, including one that said football players "look so tough, but are actually big wimpy babies apparently". "If these actions are not taken, it is a promise that we will not play".

Some of the letters differed slightly in their verbiage, but their demands were all the same. "If these things aren't addressed accordingly, we have decided that we will not participate in all athletic related events".

This is just one of the statements put out by black K-State athletes on Friday afternoon.

Head football coach Chris Klieman tweeted in support of his players.

Cornerback Tee Denson tweeted that he would not play for a program that "tolerates ignorance such as this", while his teammate Tyrone Lewis Jr. K-State basketball players Antonio Gordon and DaJuan Gordon both said they would not suit up for the Wildcats until they saw change.

McNeil most likely has received more attention than most students due to his history of activism on and off campus.

Kansas State athletes weren't alone in their criticism, either.

It seems as though change might already be afoot.

Kansas State University President Richard Myers says the school is considering its options after a student posted a tweet mocking the death of George Floyd. Myers said Friday that McNeil's divisive comments do not represent Kansas State's values.

The university may be limited in their ability to take action; in 2017 it adopted a version of the Chicago Statement on free-speech, earning itself a "green light" rating from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. "Bigotry, prejudice & racism have no place here".

The Kansas State Athletic Department also didn't reply to a request from the Daily Dot, but the director of the department at the university did release a statement condemning McNeil on Twitter.

McNeil accused the group of "condemning the innocent high school students for having the gall to smile in the face of an adult's aggressive behavior", and he saw this as an example of their "fair-weather conservatism", according to an article in American Greatness, which summarized the controversy.
