NBA Re-Opening Night Odds: Lakers-Clippers Pick'Em

Inside the media’s call with NBA power brokers to address restart concerns

The NBA officially announced its "opening night" schedule on Friday, providing fans with what should be a pair of entertaining matchups right off the bat. Each team will compete in eight "seeding games" to complete the regular season, and the playoffs will follow, all at the Disney site.

On top of three nationally televised games on ESPN, the Pelicans' game against Sacramento on August 11 will also be on TNT, meaning half of New Orleans' remaining games will be nationally televised.

NBA TV will televise seven games during the first week of the season restart, beginning with a matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers on July 31.

It's not easy, with the Raptors having gone 7-8 against the eight teams in the first half of the 2019-20 season. The 113-page health and safety protocol put in place in an effort to protect players, coaches and others involved from the coronavirus was approved, too.

"If we had a single player test positive, frankly, whether that player was an All-Star or a journeyman, that player would then go into quarantine".

There were more than 2.4 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States as of Friday night, according to The New York Times, and almost 125,000 deaths attributed to it.

"The level of concern has increased, not just because of the increased levels in Florida, but throughout the country", he said.

Silver admitted the daily case count in Florida - which neared 9,000 in the totals announced Friday - was something he is anxious about.

But if there were multiple players testing positive en masse, Silver said the league will have to make a decision. The agreement comes at a time when COVID-19 cases are spiking in Florida. And Silver acknowledged that even though the league "hasn't worked through every scenario" regarding the possibility of on-site positive tests at Disney, he believes coming back is the best move. "They bring people together when we need it the most and they can show how we can balance public health and economic necessity".
