After Decades of Resistance Washington Redskins Agree to Change 'Racist' Name

The Redskins' decision came in the wake of FedEx, which paid $205million for naming rights to the team's stadium, and other corporate partners calling for the team to change its nickname.

Frederick Smith, the chairman, FedEx's CEO and president, owns a minority stake in the Redskins.

Also Nike, the NFL's official uniform supplier, removed all Redskins merchandise from their website after investors reportedly sent letters to them and FedEx urging them to end their relationships with Dan Snyder's franchise unless the team's name is changed.

Anderson included the team has said internally that no other owner has contributed more to the Native American community monetarily.

Cleveland's Major League Baseball team hasn't always been called the Indians - and the team indicated Friday it might soon be willing to change its name again.

Police Arrest Armed Man Near Trudeau's Residence, Prime Minister Was Not Home

PepsiCo told The Associated Press on Friday, "It is time for a change".

Corporate pressure from stadium sponsor FedEx and the move by Nike, the official National Football League licensee of team gear, that it would no longer carry Redskins products on its website, are the final straws.

Another sticking point for the Redskins - Snyder has long hoped to move the team back to the site of its former stadium within Washington proper.

"Now my hope is that the dialogue is enriched and those who have been pushing for change have been emboldened and those who have resisted it perhaps reflect on what happened today and reconsider", Hoskin said.

"It's an obstacle for us locally, but it's also an obstacle for the federal government who leases the land to us", Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said last month of the Redskins name.

In his own statement, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was "supportive of this important step".

If Snyder moves forward with changing the name of the franchise, he will have the NFL's support. "As a lifelong Redskins fan, and I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it's all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season", he said.
