Texas reports record number of new COVID-19 cases with 8,258

Gov. Abbott issues statewide mask requirement

The face mask executive order is a major reversal for the Texas governor who initially refused to mandate state-wide mask wearing.

But following Abbott's even more aggressive order, which impacts the entire state, Patrick has yet to issue a statement.

The governor also gave local authorities the ability to ban outdoor gatherings of more than 10 people.

Children younger than 10 years old, people with medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask, people drinking or eating, or people exercising outside are exempt from the order.

In a report from NPR, he said, "Texans can continue to earn a paycheck", but also stressed the importance of protecting other people through the use of face masks. Democrats, most notably the leadership of the state's largest cities, have complained Abbott reopened Texas too quickly and have pointed to the record numbers of confirmed new cases and hospitalizations.

A written or verbal warning can be issued (pdf) to a first-time violator of the mask requirement.

"Wearing a face covering will help us to keep Texas open for business", Mr Abbott said, announcing the order.

Tropical Depression 5 no longer a threat
A faster east-northeastward motion is expected by tonight, followed by further acceleration on Sunday. Tropical Depression 5 is moving just north of Bermuda bringing rain and windy conditions to the area.

"Covid-19 is not going away", Mr Abbott, a Republican, said on Thursday. The order affects nearly all counties in Texas - ones with over 20 cases of coronavirus.

After starting to reopen Texas businesses last month, Abbott reversed himself on Friday, June 26, and ordered bars to close and restaurants to limit dining room occupancy to 50 percent of capacity. "In fact it's getting worse".

He also urged his constituents to stay home when possible, but stressed that his announcement is not a "stay-at-home order".

President Donald Trump said yesterday he was "all for masks", a shift in tone to his reluctance to wear a face covering in public, though he maintained mandatory mask rules were unnecessary. It was the third-consecutive day the county had more than 1,200 new cases of the novel coronavirus.

The specifically required the protesters and the demonstrators, in a group of more than 10 people, to cover their faces.

The order is in response to the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases, and states everyone must wear a mask while out in public. On June 25, Texas halted its re-opening plan.

Texas on Wednesday reported a record 8076 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, 1000 more than the record high a day earlier.
