He said because the tests kept coming up negative, there was no issue with having close interaction with colleagues who also tested negative and would not wear a mask unless he or a colleague tested positive.

The U.S. representative from Texas, where coronavirus cases have surged since the state reopened, tested positive in a prescreening at the White House, the news outlet said, citing multiple sources. He was scheduled to fly to Texas with President Donald Trump.

Gohmert's office didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. Mario Diaz Balart (R-FL), Neal Dunn (R-FL), Morgan Griffith (R-VA), Mike Kelly (R-PA), Ben McAdams (D-UT), Tom Rice (R-SC), and Sen.

Mr. Gohmert is the seventh House member known to have tested positive for the coronavirus.

The news of Gohmert's positive test is likely to prompt concerns for lawmakers in Washington.

An eight-term lawmaker, Gohmert is often seen without wearing a mask.

"I don't have the coronavirus, turns out as of yesterday I've never had it", Gohmert told CNN. "But in the last week or two, I have worn a mask more than I have in the whole last four months".

A spokesperson for Barr said the attorney general will be tested for the virus on Wednesday because of his contact with Gohmert. "He did not do that, he put others at risk".

"He was a member that was unwilling to consistently wear a mask", said Rep. Zoe Lofgren, California Democrat, as she ran a hearing on immigration.

In another hearing Wednesday, Rep Zoe Lofgren inserted to advise members who are physically present that they are needed to wear a mask.

One of the members was heard asking whether it was "permissible to drink a sip of coffee", in which Nadler replied, "it is not permissible".
