Covid 19 coronavirus: Texas congressman blames masks for positive virus test

U.S. Attorney General William Barr to be tested for coronavirus

During an appearance on Fox News on Wednesday night, Texas Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert said he'll take hydroxychloriquine to treat COVID-19, despite studies showing President Donald Trump's "miracle" drug to be ineffective and even risky.

Pelosi has tried to encourage mask use, and committees have rules requiring the wearing of face coverings in hearing rooms.

Gohmert's positive test prompted immediate concerns across the Capitol as he had voted, walked the hallways and attended two hearings on Tuesday, often without a mask. "Louie Gohmert ought to quarantine himself right now", Hoyer said.

Gohmert was planning to fly home to Texas with the president aboard Air Force One Wednesday, but he canceled, an aide said, because of the positive test. Video footage shows the two men, both maskless, only footsteps apart.

Whether to wear a mask in public during the coronavirus pandemic, however, has become a divisive issue in the United States.

Texas GOP Rep. Louie Gohmert, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, has resisted wearing a mask and tested positive for coronavirus.

"It's really ironic, because a lot of people have made a big deal out of my not wearing a mask a lot".

Gohmert's case renewed a debate on Capitol Hill about whether lawmakers traveling from other parts of the country should be tested when they return to Washington.

It was evident that following Gohmert's positive test result, the potential spread of coronavirus was on the minds of members of Congress on Wednesday. Some are sequestering in their offices until they can get tested.

Russian Federation claims success in producing COVID-19 vaccine
The scientists' findings were presented Thursday by Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's consumer protection and human wellbeing watchdog. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to surge, all hopes rest on the development of a vaccine to beat the virus.

A spokesperson for the Justice Department said the attorney general would be tested for coronavirus on Wednesday. There is no proven science saying that a person can not get the virus again.

"My doctor and I are all in", Gohmert told Fox News host Sean Hannity.

"He was NOT admonished for not wearing a mask because he wore a mask at the hearing, unless he was speaking, and has been wearing one which ensures that you touch things and adjust the mask and whatever you might have touched stays on the mask to infect you", Hair said of Gohmert. Advertisement "Ridiculing people for wearing masks is also not uncommon", an aide of a Republican congress member who previously had COVID-19 said to Politico.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Mr Nadler wished Mr Gohmert a "full and speedy recovery".

The Republican representative from Texas was also called out by his colleagues for repeatedly refusing to wear a mask while at work.

That decision has rankled some of their colleagues, including Blunt and Senator Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Pelosi and McConnell cited those front-line workers when they rejected Trump's offer earlier this year to send rapid tests for lawmakers to the Capitol.

Pelosi, D-Calif., is considering other measures to more strictly enforce the wearing of masks in the Capitol complex, according to a Democratic official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private discussion.
