Mars Perseverance rover has LAUNCHED on epic voyage to Mars — NASA launch

2020's final Mars mission poised for blastoff from Florida

"I'm looking forward to, ideally, a very quiet and boring cruise to Mars, as we prepare for the never-boring and always stressful entry, descent and landing on the 18th of February!" It will also study the planet's geology and climate. It will take the spacecraft seven months to reach Mars after traveling 300 million miles.

Why it matters: The rover is the third spacecraft lofted to Mars this month, with the first two sent by the United Arab Emirates and China.

DOE has enabled space exploration on almost 30 missions over the past 50 years, including the Curiosity rover which is now on Mars, US Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabaar said.

Earlier today, NASA successfully launched Perseverance (pictured) from Cape Canaveral in Florida. Space experts believe that understanding viability of air vehicles on the Red Planet will help during the next Mars mission that will be most probably the first step to build a colony on the Red Planet.

Perseverance was loaded atop a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket, which had a good liftoff and deployed its second stage which put the spacecraft into a parking orbit as it readies to depart on its trip towards Mars, which will see it arrive in February 2021.

Samples taken straight from Mars, not drawn from meteorites discovered on Earth, have always been considered "the Holy Grail of Mars science", according to NASA's original and now-retired Mars czar, Scott Hubbard.

Oxford COVID-19 vaccine trial: Expert panel defers Serum Institute’s proposal
In Phase 3, the vaccine is given to thousands of people and tested for efficacy and again for safety. The hope is if the immune system later is exposed to the real virus, it will attack it.

Perseverance is a highly refined version of Curiosity.

The launch window for lift-off extends from July 30 to August 15; on July 30, a two-hour launch window first opens at 5:20 pm IST.

Once on the surface, Perseverance will scrounge for evidence of past microscopic life in an ancient lakebed, and gather the most promising rock samples for future pickup. It will collect and cache samples of rock cores and soil to be retrieved and returned to Earth by future planned missions. NASA and DOE are already planning for their next goal: NASA's Dragonfly mission to Saturn's moon, Titan, in 2026, which will also be powered by DOE, he said.

Satellite images suggest Jezero, located on the western edge of Isidis Planitia - a giant impact basin just north of the Martian equator, may have been a lake more than 3.5 billion years ago, when Mars was warmer and wetter.

"With one carefully chosen sample from Mars, we could discover that the history of life on the Earth is not unique in the Universe". The Martian atmosphere is 95.32% carbon dioxide, and the rover will also conduct experiments to extract oxygen from carbon-dioxide with a view to helping subsequent missions set up life-support systems.

It will carry a small 1.8-kg helicopter named Ingenuity, which will be the first aircraft to fly in a controlled way on another planet. SHERLOC - short for Scanning Habitable Environments with Raman and Luminescence for Organics and Chemicals - is, like its eponym, a detective.
