Samsung Q2 earnings higher than expected amid Covid-19 disruption

Huawei takes top spot in global smartphone vendors Samsung falls to second

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit many companies very hard, but Samsung's decline has been steeper than most as many of its key markets are suffering.

"It is desperate to showcase its brand strength to domestic consumers, component suppliers and developers".

It remains unclear how much of Huawei's second-quarter sales were driven by its 5G smartphones and high-end models that are most vulnerable to the restrictions, said Nicole Peng, vice president of Mobility at Canalys. The company was able to take advantage of the economic recovery in China, where Huawei now sells over 70% of its smartphones.

It'll be interesting to see if or how these numbers change in the coming months and years as the global economy continues to deal with the fallout from the pandemic and Huawei continues to deal with the impact of U.S. trade restrictions. Another Canalys analyst Mo Jia said this position is critical for Huawei to be in.

Huawei has long harbored ambitions to overtake Samsung as the world's biggest smartphone seller, and going by the numbers from Canalys, that's just what happened during the April-June period this year.

Yankees-Phillies game postponed again
The Marlins were scheduled to host the Nationals after the two Orioles series; it appears those games are postponed for now. The Phillies opened 1-2 against the Marlins. "And we think we can keep people safe and continue to play".

The report said that Huawei's shipments came even after the USA restrictions that have stifled business outside mainland China.

"While risks remain due to persisting uncertainties from Covid-19 and growing competitions, the company will respond to reviving demand through flexible global supply chain management to ensure stable supply to customers", Samsung said.

That could be enough to drag the company to revenue losses for the year, according to research firm Crisp Idea. The lack of access to Google's Mobile Services has reduced the appeal of Huawei's smartphones in global markets despite Huawei having introduced some impressive hardware in the a year ago or so. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has led the market in a quarter.

That would also hurt Samsung's memory chip business, because the company supplies chips for rival smartphone companies such as Apple and Huawei.
