With 48000 fresh cases India's Covid tally crosses 15 lakh mark

People are being urged to wear masks in public to curb the spread of the virus

Eighteen thousand COVID-19-linked deaths, which is about 50 per cent of the total deaths reported so far, were registered this month. The total number of cases in the country includes 528,242 active cases, with 1,020,582 cured/discharged/migrated. After a long time, the city that has been steadily reporting more than 1,000 cases every day, added 700 cases to its tally in the day, taking the cumulative count to 1.11 lakh. A day earlier, India had recorded the highest-single day spike in the number of COVID-19 cases with a record of 49,931 new cases in 24 hours. Only the USA with over 1.5 lakh deaths, Brazil (90,000-plus), the United Kingdom (45,999) and Mexico (45,361) have reported higher Covid-19 fatalities than India.

Odisha's coronavirus hotspot Ganjam reported the highest 332 cases followed by Khurda comprising Bhubaneswar (312), Gajapati (89), Keonjhar (77) and Koraput (73). "India's case fatality rate is 2.21 pc, as against 4 pc globally, and is amongst the lowest in the world". He added that these labs will not be limited to testing for COVID, but in future, will also be able to test for Hepatitis B and C, HIV, Dengue and several other diseases. The state's virus caseload now stands at 28,107 as 1,215 positive cases have been reported from 28 of 30 districts of the state. The day's new cases in Andhra Pradesh, at 10,167, were second only to Maharashtra's. As per updates, almost 16.5 million people have contracted the infection around the world with 654,860 deaths.

Officials said more tests are leading to higher detection of infections.

Also, 24 states and UTs including Assam (0.25 pc), Bihar (0.60 pc), Andhra Pradesh (1.01 pc), Tamil Nadu (1.60 pc), Rajasthan (1.67 pc), Karnataka (1.91 pc), Uttar Pradesh (1.98 pc) have lower case fatality rate than national average, he said. "We have repeatedly told state governments that in 80 pc of the new positive cases it is possible to track their close contacts within the first 72 hours".

As many as 7,493 people have been infected with the virus in Jharkhand, 6,731 in Chhattisgarh, 5,445 in Uttarakhand, 4,540 in Goa, 3,759 in Tripura, 2,515 in Puducherry, 2,146 in Manipur, 1,954 in Himachal Pradesh, and 1,246 in Ladakh.

The death toll increased to 1,090 and the tally of cases surged to 1,02,349, according to the Health Department bulletin.
