Alan Parker, director of "Midnight Express", "Fame" dies at 76

Director Sir Alan Parker who made Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express and Evita has died at the age of 76

Parker was best known for directing "Fame", "Evita" and "Bugsy Malone" but other hit movies that he worked on included "Midnight Express", "Mississippi Burning", "The Commitments" and "Angela's Ashes".

His work won him the first of 19 BAFTA awards - this one for Best Director.

In a statement, his family said Parker died on Friday in London after a long illness.

Born on February 14, 1944 in Islington, North London, Parker began his career as an advertisement copywriter and commercial director.

He moved on to TV with critically acclaimed 1974 drama "The Evacuees", which won an global Emmy Award.

He was awarded the Academy Fellowship, the highest honor in the British film industry, in 2013, and was knighted in 2002.

Eventually forming his own company to make advertisements, Parker slowly moved into the world of filmmaking through scripting the 1971 "Melody" and eventually moving to directing full features with 1976's 'Bugsy Malone'.

Pelosi Mandates Masks in the House of Representatives
The lawmaker said he is asymptomatic, and suggested that he could have contracted the virus while he was wearing a mask. However, he was seen without it a few times during the hearing and was seen walking and talking with Barr.

He followed that with 1978 feature Midnight Express, the reality-based story of an American's harrowing incarceration in a Turkish prison for alleged drug offences.

Parker's work ranged widely across subjects and genres.

After years of acclaim and studio battles, Parker stepped away from the camera after 2003's 'The Life of David Gale.' He confirmed his retirement in 2015.

Parker was a notable director of musicals, a genre he both embraced and expanded.

"Evita" composer Webber remembered his "friend and collaborator" Parker as "one of the few directors to truly understand musicals on screen", while Modine, who starred in 1984's "Birdy", hailed him as "a great artist [whose] films will live forever". Burning would nearly act as Parker's peak as his follow-up films, Come See the Paradise and The Road to Wellville received generally mixed reviews and were box office failures while The Commitments was underwhelming at the box office despite rave reviews and his 1976 adaptation of Evita saw mixed reviews but was a box office smash.

Parker's last major success came with the 1996 musical drama "Evita", in which Madonna played the leading role of Argentina's late first lady Eva Peron.

And the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, which hands out the Oscars, added: "From Fame to Midnight Express, two-time Oscar nominee Alan Parker was a chameleon".
