The German left Formula 1 at the end of past year having been replaced by Esteban Ocon at Renault for 2020, but of course previously spent five seasons at the team then known as Force India, initially as reserve driver before racing for them in 2012 and between 2014-2016.

The 30-year-old returned a positive result on Thursday evening after revealing he visited Mexico to see his sick mother following the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Perez has been sidelined for this race, and probably the ensuing round at Silverstone next weekend, too, after contracting coronavirus. "I'll step in and try do the best I can for the team". It was the German driver's first session in an F1 vehicle since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last December, where he drove for Renault.

"Our philosophy is we take all precautions necessary in light of where we're traveling and if we do take those precautions, I'm confident we won't get the virus".

"Perez has entered self-quarantine in accordance with the instructions of the relevant public health authorities, and will continue to follow the procedure mandated by those authorities", read a statement issued by Formula 1 and the FIA.

"After Hungary, I took a private plane to go to Mexico to see my mum for two days because she had a big accident, so as soon as she left hospital I was able to see her".

As a public service, Shaw Media will provide open access to information related to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) emergency. The positivity rate is the percentage of people who test positive out of all the people tested in a given time period.

Racing Point shares reserves with engine supplier Mercedes, with Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne and Mexican Esteban Gutierrez in those roles.

"I was on my way to the Nürburgring for another racing project when the call from Otmar came".

Nico Hulkenberg reflected on a "crazy and wild 24 hours" as he impressed on his unexpected return to Formula 1 action in place of Sergio Perez, who tested positive for coronavirus.

"Having to find a replacement for Sergio at short notice is no easy task", Szafnauer said, "but in Nico we've got a fantastic supersub who the team knows very well".

He added: "I want to thank my fellow drivers for all the support they have given me, my team, the authorities, the fans, certainly tough moments for me but I'm sure I'll come back stronger from this. He's a buddy of mine, an old team-mate and I wish him a speedy recovery".

With Britain extending the virus isolation period to 10 days from seven on Thursday, Perez also looks set to miss the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix - race five - at the same circuit on the following weekend.
