Major League Baseball coronavirus outbreak expands

Washington Nationals' Trea Turner jumps into the arms of a teammate after his solo home run during the third inning of a baseball game against the New York Yankees at Nationals Park Sunday

Two positive tests by St. Louis Cardinals players on Friday exacerbated concerns inside the sport about the presence of the coronavirus and whether MLB's protocols are being followed properly by players to prevent outbreaks similar to Miami's. On Friday alone, six teams aren't playing games because of the wide-ranging effects of players testing positive.

PHILADELPHIA - One Philadelphia Phillies employee who works in the visiting clubhouse has tested positive for the coronavirus, a person familiar with the results told The Associated Press.

They are for the time being a homeless team and now the Blue Jays are even having trouble finding opponents to play. "All activity at Citizens Bank Park has been canceled today and until further notice", the team said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Major League Baseball postponed and rearranged a number of series after the Miami Marlins had an outbreak during their stay in Philadelphia.

Soto, who had 34 homers and 110 RBIs during the 2019 regular season and was a breakout star of October, tested positive for the coronavirus and was sidelined on opening day last week. Players and staff have been instructed to isolate in their hotel rooms in Milwaukee, and the club did not leave the hotel Friday for Miller Park.

The NBA has not had any positive tests since its return on July 30 as they operate in a secure bubble at the Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex near Orlando.

MLB's season could reportedly be shut down as soon as Monday if teams and players can't better control coronavirus.

Saturday's game remains scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.

The Yankees were scheduled to play the Phillies in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, but that game officially was postponed "out of an abundance of caution", according to Major League Baseball.

It became their reality when an outbreak of COVID-19 befell the Miami Marlins.

Indeed it is not just the Marlins that have been impacted by the team's rash of positive cases.

"The team is now conducting rapid testing of the entire traveling party, has implemented contact tracing, and will continue to self-isolate", the team said.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the test results were not announced.
