NASA Launching Perseverance In Search Of Martians

NASA set to launch Perseverance rover to 'seek signs of ancient life' on Mars

If the launch goes as planned, NASA's Perseverance will land on Mars on February 18, 2021. Perseverance will launch today (Thursday, July 30) after a series of delays forced NASA to extend the original launch window.

The helicopter was named by essay contest victor Vaneeza Rupani, who wrote that exploring the Moon and Mars "are not just the product of pure determination; they are a combination of human perseverance and ingenuity". American space agency NASA is all set to launch its newest Mars 2020 rover, Perseverance and ready to head for the Red Planet in just a few hours along with a robotic helicopter named Ingenuity.

() - NASA's next-generation Mars rover Perseverance is set for liftoff from Florida's Cape Canaveral on Thursday on a mission to search for traces of potential past life on Earth's planetary neighbor. 7th grader, Alexander Mather, left, submitted the rover's name "Perseverance", while 11th grader, Vaneeza Rupani submitted the name "Ingenuity" as a suggestion for the experimental helicopter.

"The rover will collect and store a set of rock and soil samples that could be returned to Earth by future Mars sample return missions".

The Mars 2020 launch, scheduled to occur at the opening of a 2 hour window beginning at 7:50 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 41, is now forecast to enjoy an 80% chance of "go" for weather conditions. "The technology onboard Perseverance was created to help us find the answer".

NASA's Perseverance will launch today during a two-hour window of opportunity.

The live streaming of the event will begin at 4.30 pm IST (7.00 am EDT).

Perseverance was originally pencilled in to launch on July 17 but a series of technical issues forced NASA to delay the mission. The Denver-based rocket maker and its heritage companies have launched all of NASA's Mars missions, beginning with the Mariners in 1964. The mission was originally scheduled for launch this year until problems with parachutes and electronics convinced scientists to perform additional tests.

"There's a lot of things that we need to be able to develop and discover", Bridenstine said, "so that when we get to Mars we can actually survive for long periods of time".
