United Kingdom buys 60 million doses of recent vaccine

Sanofi lifts earnings view as Regeneron stake sale boosts second quarter

The government's move to purchase 60 million doses of a potential vaccine from pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKlein and Sanofi for the United Kingdom, undermines global efforts to ensure fair and world-wide access to Covid-19 vaccines.

The vaccine produced by GSK and Sanofi, which together have the largest vaccine manufacturing capability in the world, is based on the existing DNA-based technology used to produce Sanofi's seasonal flu vaccine.

The headquarters of GlaxoSmithKline PLC is pictured in London on July 29, 2013.

The partners plan to provide a significant portion of total worldwide available supply capacity in 2021/22 to the global initiative, "Access to COVID‐19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator", a global collaboration of leaders of governments, global health organizations, businesses and philanthropies to accelerate development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines. Sanofi and GSK, which had first teamed up in April, confirmed in a statement that regulatory approval for their vaccine could be won by the first half of 2021 if clinical data was positive.

"While this progress is truly remarkable, the fact remains that there are no guarantees".

The latest deal marks the fifth time the British Government has secured a deal for a promising COVID-19 vaccine, and by far, the country has acquired up to 250 million vaccine doses, which makes it one of the frontrunners in the global race to obtain the safest and most powerful COVID-19 vaccine. Trump said USA has ramped up the production of vaccine and will rapidly produce 100 million doses after it is approved.

Arsenal latest club to show interest in Jack Grealish
A product of the Villa youth academy, Grealish has grown into one of the top talents in English football over the years. Villa do not want to lose Grealish over the summer and are sticking to their £80m figure.

The Government has stressed the importance of investing in a broad range of vaccines, to improve the chances of a successful outcome. Remarks containing abusive and obscene language, personal attacks of any kind or promotion will be removed and the user banned.

Sanofi, which is leading the clinical development of the vaccine, expects a phase 1/2 study to begin in September, with a large-scale phase 3 trial to start by the end of 2020.

Kate Bingham, chair of the U.K.'s Vaccines Taskforce, said through the agreement with GSK and Sanofi, the Vaccine Taskforce can add another type of vaccine to the three different types of vaccine it has already secured.

"In the second quarter, with lockdown measures, we have seen an impact on people's willingness, or being able to access vaccines", Chief Executive Emma Walmsley said on a media call, adding there were early signs the attitude was changing.

"Even though this arrangement is pretty fantastic information, we mustn't be complacent or over-optimistic".

Both companies are committed to making their COVID-19 vaccine candidate affordable and available globally.
