Coronavirus: Millions of Americans set to lose key $600 benefit

Target Hiring Employment Unemployment

One of the main focuses of the legislation is an enhanced federal unemployment benefit that had paid out-of-work Americans an extra $600 each week, which was part of the first relief package, the CARES Act, in March.

"We're just hopeful that they're willing to really negotiate today, and if they are we're prepared to make a deal on behalf of the American people", Meadows said heading into the meeting with Mnuchin, who remarked "Just another working day at the Capitol".

Democrats have rejected a White House plan for a short-term plan while negotiations continued.

Lawmakers were optimistic the pressure of the deadline would force House Democrats and Republicans to come to agreement, but both sides remain at odds.

Referring to the mounting cases and deaths from Covid-19, Pelosi said: "This is a freight train that is picking up steam. They don't", Pelosi said, noting that the White House and Republican-controlled Senate didn't unveil their proposals until this week.

Congress might make payments retroactive once a deal is reached, but at minimum the delay is expected to cause anxiety for millions of Americans.

The Senate attempted to pass its unemployment extension bill, which offers to match two-thirds of a previous wage from combined state and federal sources.

With the economic recovery stalled and more than 150,000 Americans dead, Democrats have been pushing for a comprehensive $3 trillion relief bill that would extend the $600 weekly benefit through January, among many other provisions.

Democrats want a wide-ranging economic stimulus bill that would include about $1 trillion in aid to state and local governments experiencing plunging revenues during the economic downturn.

White House officials took their own hard partisan line, accusing Democrats of refusing Trump's proposals to extend the jobless benefit that expired yesterday and a moratorium on evictions that ended last week.

A breakdown of Big Tech's big Q2 earnings
No wonder, when it became clear the antitrust hearing would be delayed , that the rescheduled hearing took place before earnings. In the latest quarter, Apple posted revenue of $59.7bn, an increase of 11pc from the same quarter previous year .

Krupp says her applications for new education jobs have been passed over, and she can't work in stores or restaurants because she has an autoimmune disease that puts her at risk for severe complications if she caught the coronavirus.

In another signal that Republicans are preparing to yield on the $600 jobless benefit, Arizona Republican Martha McSally, who is facing a tough reelection race this fall, offered a one-week extension of the benefit on the Senate floor.

"They won't engage. Period", McConnell said as he opened the Senate.

"It's worthless unless you are using it for this objective", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters after a late-night meeting between herself, Senate counterpart Chuck Schumer of New York, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Talks will continue through the weekend but a deal seems far off.

On Friday, Trump took to Twitter to explicitly endorse extending the $600 payment and to criticize top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer.

Talks on the relief bill are at a standstill with few reasons for optimism despite sweeping agreement among Washington's top power players that Congress must pass further relief in coming days and weeks. "They don't even have the votes for it in the Senate".

Republicans controlling the Senate have kept the relief measure on "pause" in a strategy aimed at reducing its price tag. But as the pandemic surged back over the summer - and as fractures inside the GOP have eroded the party's negotiating position - Republicans displayed some greater flexibility. Among the issues sure to gather momentum is a Democratic demand for a 15 percent increase in food stamp benefits. Debbie Stabenow of MI, the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

"A week would be a time for that - if we had a bill".
