Red onions linked to multi-state salmonella outbreak

Spring farmers market finds

Dozens of Salmonella cases in the state of Oregon have been traced back to red onions produced by a California company, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

The onions come from California-based onion producer Thomson International and were exported to Canada, which had 114 onion-connected salmonella cases the Public Health Agency of Canada said Thursday. This recall would include red, white, yellow, and sweet onions from Thomson International, Inc. The same goes for food containing red onions.

The company feared a case of cross-contamination, FDA said.

That includes any prepared foods made in the USA which might contain them.

A total of 396 people in 39 states have been sickened by this salmonella outbreak since June, including 59 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.

Sysco is recalling red onions imported from the US from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The Red Onion Salmonella lawsuits will begin to investigate, alongside the CDC and FDA investigations, the root cause of the outbreak and how contaminated red onions were allowed to spread so far for almost a month before being identified.

As in Canada, western regions account for most of the US cases in this outbreak.

How do I check if my onions at home are safe?

Recall information will be made public as soon as it is available from Thomson International, Inc. It can also be on the package. If it is, don't eat it. Throw it away. If you're not sure where they came from, get rid of the food. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Consumers are advised not to eat onions with the Thomson International name on the label.

Salmonella symptoms typically start six to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria, and can include fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting.

The illness, which is called salmonellosis, typically lasts four to seven days and most recover without treatment.

Eighteen of those individuals have been hospitalized, though none have died.

The BCCDC says that anyone experiencing symptoms should contact their health care provider.
