Coronavirus vaccine news update: Scientists from all the countries of the world including India are engaged in developing the coronavirus vaccine.

As early as Wednesday, Britain announced an agreement with Sanofi in which the country reserved 60 million doses of potential vaccine.

The US government has selected a potential vaccine from Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline for its Operation Warp Speed COVID-19 vaccine development initiative, committing up to $2.1 billion for an initial 100 million doses. That vaccine is expected to enter clinical trials in the fall.

The money will go toward clinical trials, scaling up manufacturing and purchasing 100 million doses of the vaccine. Sanofi said the deal also includes an option for the company to supply an additional 500 million doses.

As in earlier deals, the contract with Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline was made under the auspices of the Trump administration's "Operation Warp Speed", which aims to secure 300 million vaccine doses for the January 2021. Here's how the top drugmakers see the race for a cure playing out in 2020. It's the largest funding announcement for an Operation Warp Speed vaccine so far.

U.S. investment to speed up trials, scale-up manufacturing and boost vaccine development is "great news for the world", assuming vaccines are shared, Berkley said. The University of Oxford and partner AstraZeneca Plc, Moderna Inc. and Pfizer Inc. are among the leaders in the sprint to deliver a shot.

Shattock said there were numerous coronavirus vaccines now in clinical trials, and he predicted that at least some of them would prove to be effective. The company's CEO, Stephane Bancel, previously told Business Insider that data from the trial could be ready as early as October.

Earlier this week, European Union talks with Sanofi, Pfizer PFE.N and Johnson & Johnson JNJ.N hit an impasse over price, payment method and potential liability costs, European Union officials told Reuters. The timeline would be unprecedented, but many other candidates are racing to meet a similar deadline.

The two firms said clinical trials for their vaccine should start in September, with a phase 3 study underway by the end of the year.

In May, French Junior Economy Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said it would be "unacceptable" that the USA may be the first nation to get access to a COVID-19 vaccine produced by Sanofi, which is a French company.

According to the latest reports, the vaccine candidate is based on Sanofi's recombinant protein-based technology employed to produce an influenza vaccine, as well as the established pandemic adjuvant technology of GSK. Now, it's using the same technology in its attempt to induce immunity to the coronavirus.
