Bill Gates on Microsoft's acquisition of TikTok

Bill Gates urges US to help poorer countries get Covid-19 vaccines

Microsoft's TikTok deal will bring about further challenges for the company according to the company's co-founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates.

Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in July that the U.S. was searching into a probable ban of the TikTok application. "Those are the ones most scalable and low-priced", Gates said. "Anyway, Microsoft will have to deal with all of that", adds Gates.

In Friday's WIRED interview, Gates acknowledged that conspiracy theories spread like wildfire on social media and suggested that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg should do more to combat misinformation on Facebook.

"You're paying billions of dollars in this very inequitable way to get the most worthless test results of any country in the world", Gates said on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS.

One of the primary reasons why Microsoft believes TikTok is an investment worth doing is it will get a readymade product in the social media space. He described US President Donald Trump's decision to ban TikTok as "pretty freaky".

"This may sound self-serving, but I think that the game being more competitive is probably a good thing", Gates said when asked if he was wary about the deal.

OH governor’s conflicting COVID-19 tests raise backlash
As part of the standard protocol to greet President Trump on the tarmac in Cleveland, I took a COVID test. After his positive test, he announced on Twitter that he would be quarantining for 14 days.

Trump also asked for a significant cut in the sale of TikTok's United States operations, which was also criticised by Gates.

In response, the billionaire said, "I agree that the principle this is proceeding on is singly odd".

Trump earlier set a deadline around September 15 for Microsoft to close the deal with TikTok that it was pursuing. The minimize issue, that's doubly odd. A Reuters report on the matter states that Twitter's management would rather want Jack Dorsey's Twitter to focus on expanding the operations of its core business, rather than acquiring a new medium and increase liabilities.

The Redmond giant had noted that it is holding advanced stage talks with TikTok's parent ByteDance to finalize a deal (or not) by September 15.

Last week, President Trump signed an executive order that would force the sale of TikTok's United States operations or face being banned. Bytedance's most popular application, TikTok saw massive growth in the past couple of years, as it expanded its operations to all parts of the world.
