SpaceX Crewed Mission Postponed Due To Bad Weather Just Before Launch

SpaceX Falcon 9 is scheduled to launch from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida

Weather at Florida's Kennedy Space Centre was expected to clear 10 minutes after launch but due to the movements of the Space Station the possible launch window was "instantaneous", meaning any delay at all would have meant cancellation. Today's launch will also mark the first time in history that a commercial aerospace company will carry humans into Earth's orbit, a milestone NASA and space fans have been looking forward to for almost a decade.

"Unfortunately, we are not going to launch today", SpaceX launch director Mike Taylor told NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley.

United Kingdom imposes quarantine on arrivals from Jamaica
The UK imposes quarantine measures on countries where the rate of infection exceeds 20 cases per 100,000 over a seven-day period. Switzerland has seen the number of positive cases inch upward in the last few weeks.

Wednesday's SpaceX Demo-2 mission, given a 60% "go" with weather conditions at press time, will send NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley into space riding a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, carried in a Crew Dragon spacecraft. Since then, NASA astronauts have had to hitch rides into orbit aboard Russia's Soyuz spacecraft. After Wednesday's launch, the coverage will continue on Thursday, May 28, for docking of Crew Dragon at the International Space Station. Rather than spend billions developing and flying cargo and resupply missions, in 2010 NASA opted to pay fixed-bid contracts for routine launches to private companies while concentrating on major goals like the 2024 Artemis moon program.

Wednesday's launch will stream live on multiple platforms, including NASA's and SpaceX's websites, YouTube and social media channels. They are set to try the launch again on Saturday afternoon, with another backup time on Sunday.
