New Brexit law will not 'tear up' EU trade plans

Dominic Raab wearing a suit and tie Foreign Secretary said a deal was 'there for the taking', but insisted Brussels must recognise that discussions this week are a 'moment of reckoning'

In a statement, Mr Johnson said he would not compromise on the "fundamentals" of what made Britain an independent nation and that no deal would still be a "good outcome" for the UK.

The UK formally left the European Union on January 31 this year, three-and-a-half years after the country narrowly voted to leave the bloc in a politically divisive referendum.

Johnson also set a deadline for mid-October to strike a trade deal, piling further pressure on negotiations.

"If we can't agree by then, then I do not see that there will be a free trade agreement between us, and we should both accept that and move on", Johnson said.

"For this, Britain in particular needs to move on the core issues of governance, what's summed up as 'level playing field, ' and on the issue of fisheries", said government spokesman Steffen Seibert.

Informal talks this week between Frost and EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier failed to find a breakthrough, dimming the eighth round of formal negotiations that are due to begin on Tuesday in London.

Michel Barnier, the bloc's top negotiator, said last week he was "worried" and "disappointed" by the current state of the talks, saying Britain would need to shift its position to reach an agreement.

He warned Britain against using the issue as a "bargaining chip" in stalled talks.

Citing the Financial Times article in a post on Twitter on Sunday night, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said it "would be a very unwise way to proceed".

Luis Suarez: Juventus interested in Barcelona forward
Messi put most of the top European club on alert after expressing his desire to leave Barcelona this summer. Another player in the Barcelona team, who called short in dedicating his future to the club.

They say it's utterly unacceptable that an International Treaty could be deliberately torn up, in the full knowledge that the consequences would mean a Hard Border on the Island of Ireland and the havoc that would entail.

It is particularly tricky in Northern Ireland, where Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said that unpicking parts of the Protocol would be a "treacherous betrayal which would inflict irreversible harm on the all-Ireland economy and the Good Friday Agreement".

No agreement before 31 December, the only rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), with their high customs duties and their extensive customs controls would apply.

"Everything that has been signed must be respected, ' chief European Union negotiator Michel Barnier told France Inter radio, in response to a 'Financial Times" report claiming British Premier Boris Johnson wanted to revise agreements on Northern Ireland and state aid. "If, on the other hand, the UK's approach became more pragmatic and realistic, there would probably be a good chance to save the negotiations and agree on a deal".

A hard border with customs, security and passport control between the United Kingdom's Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is unacceptable as it threatens the delicate balance brought by the 1998 peace process that ended three decades of conflict between Irish Catholic nationalists and pro-British Protestant unionists. And we will prosper mightily as a result.

Asked about the prime minister's assertion that a no-deal Brexit would be a "good outcome", Eustice replied: "It will be a good outcome in that we will have regained our independence as a country and we'll be making our own laws again".

Mr Morris from UK Major Ports Group added: "It can't be helpful for the clarity required for improving the readiness of businesses - already the Achilles heel of border planning".

"The EU must also realize that we are serious about leaving with an Australian-style trading relationship and reclaiming our independence as a sovereign nation if we can not find acceptable terms", he said.
